R210 – The Warmth of Christ

This statue of Jesus Christ, named ‘Christ the Redeemer’ is located at the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This magnificent statue, standing at 38 metres tall, has recently been included as the New Seven Wonders of the World. It overlooks the city from the peak of a mountain and is easily observable from the city streets. There are many similar statues of Jesus Christ in the world but this is one of the tallest of its kind. (not the tallest though)

The outstretched arms not only represent a Christian cross, but also symbolize the embracing of the people, a place where enlightenment and salvage can be found. Looking at the statue from below does give a feeling of comfort and assurance. This is a must-see for visitors to Brazil.

The construction of the statue took 9 years and it was completed in 1931. With its iconic view, it is a popular spot for holding wedding and baptism ceremonies. However like our Merlion, the statue was once struck by lightning last year but it remained unharmed due to its insulating material.

Personally I think such statue is splendid as a monument as it can be seen from most parts of the city below the mountain. Imagine looking up from the streets and seeing a towering statue which gives hope and confidence. The view is priceless.
