“So they have come…”

~in a cave~

“Are you sure we are supposed to come this way?” Tress asked uncertainly.

“Of course, I know,” I answered, “I did not throw twigs or anything. I merely followed the signs.”

“Please tell me it is normal for the demons to leave arrows and signs telling us which way to go,” Wumi muttered.

True, even now, I still could not believe that there were signs put there with big words that read “demons this way!” somehow, I hate to think about the mental state of these demons. Who in the right mind will tell people who wanted to kill them which way to go. And well, only people who were equally crazy would follow these signs. And the four of us were the crazy people.

I remembered just earlier…

“So where are the demons?” Wumi had asked those who had gathered outside his house.

“They said to go to the forest and you will know where to go,” the chief from the next village told us.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I mumbled.

Well, as soon as we reached the forest, we understood. The big and colorful signs were put in the middle of the paths leading into the forest.

Sometimes, I really hate to wonder the sanity of our group. I meant it. I really wondered. Maybe it was the fact that we all have our own quirks. We had met just less than a month and we seemed to be able to tease and laughed at each other without the fear of offending anyone. It was fun.

It had been a long time since I had such fun, I thought. How long had it been since I was really happy. I was happy but there was always this darkness in my heart.

Why me? That was what I always ask myself. Maybe I was trapped in my self-pity to understand the happiness I have.

“Look! There seemed to be some light in that direction!” Sala exclaimed excitedly, “maybe the demons are there!”

“I hate to say this again but stop being so excited at finding some demons!” Tress snapped.

Not that I could blame her but it was really strange that someone would get excited at finding demons. Really! Who in the world will want to find demons?

“Relax, Tress. That is Sala. She’s unique,” Wumi replied with a hint of exasperation.

“Yeah, I would think you are used to it since you know her the longest,” I agreed with Wumi. Really! Sala is unique.

“Yeah, try living with her for a year and see if you can take it,” Tress sighed, “then again, living with her for years and you would think I am immune to that already.”

“Hey! I am still here! Stop talking about me as if I am not here! I have you know that I,” Sala was cut off abruptly by a nudge from Tress.

“Stop talking and get going!” Tress hissed as she pushed the other girl slightly, muttering something under her breath which Sala just glared in reply.

I shared a look with Wumi. Both of us knew that the two of them were hiding secrets from us. We were curious but who were we to pry. I knew I hid things from them as well. So did Wumi. After all, my father is a merchant. I had been following him around looking at him deal with sly traders. I know a look of deception when I see one. And to tell the truth, they were not the best actor or actresses. Or maybe I am too good?

“So how long do we need to go?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“I don’t know but let’s hope it is not for long,” Wumi answered as he looked around.

It was dark and we were relying on the light that filtered in from the top. It was eerie, to say the least. What was scarier was the fact that there was a cave in the middle of a forest that looked dark and foggy. But since the arrows pointed to this way, we figured out that we had to come in.

I was leading followed by Sala and Tress and finally Wumi. It was obvious that we could not let Sala lead due her enthusiasm in finding the demons and her unique methods of finding the path to take. However, though we were traveling in a row, we could hear each other quite clearly and there were always echo whenever we said something.

“Well, how long do we have to continue? I want to get this over with,” I wondered aloud.

“Me too but I can’t say the same for Sala,” Tress sighed before she muttered, “And she’s supposed to an elegant and matured young lady.”

“Hey, I heard that! I am not that bad,” Sala protested, having heard Tress’s comment.

“Oh really?” Tress faked an innocent look, “enlighten me, please?”

However, before Sala could answer, there was a sudden drop in temperature. To my horror, I saw three statues in front of me that was otherwise known as my friends.

“No way! This can’t be happening,” I muttered in disbelief.

“Now, the trial had begun…”

~at Wumi’s house~

“Hey! That’s cheating!” the scream woke Xiaomei up from her sleep.

Hmm… looks like Tress won today, Xiaomei thought as she rubbed her eyes. The two of them had been at this “game” for the last week they had been here.

Wumi would wake up early and then the two of them. Actually she had decided to sleep in since there was only one toilet and she did not want to fight for the use of it. However, Tress and Sala seemed to think it was a game to see who got into the toilet after Wumi. And well, it seemed that Tress had won three times in a row including today.

“You told me to look outside! That is cheating, Tress!” Sala continued to scream angrily.

“Hey! There’s no rule that say I can’t cheat!” Tress retorted from inside the toilet.

“That is not an honorable thing to do! And hurry up!” Sala continued to rant till Tress finally got out of the toilet.

Xiaomei smiled as Tress stuck her tongue out at Sala childishly before disappearing to do her part of chores.

It had been a week. The snowstorm that had started since the day they met was finally and thankfully becoming weaker. Soon, they might be able to return to their respective homes. Yet, after the memorable Christmas celebration, none of them looked forward to go back to their separate paths.

As the few days progressed, they had fallen into a routine. Each of them helped with the housework. It was very easy to know who was to do what. Explosion was a very good way to gauge who can do this chore or not. A few explosion and Xiaomei ruled the kitchen. Well, maybe small explosions. Not everyone could cook good food. Then there was laundry, cleaning and cutting of firewood.

Anyway, the days passed as peacefully as they could while they were living at Wumi’s house. Soon the roads would be cleared and they would be off reluctantly. Just as they were sitting at the table having their breakfast, the peace was interrupted by loud banging on Wumi’s door.

“Hurry up, Wumi! Open up!” a frantic voice yelled as he banged on the door.

“What?” Wumi asked as he opened the door quickly.

“You have to go now! No matter where, just go!” the man shouted, panting.

“What, Jim? You have to be clearer than that!” Wumi demanded.

The others recognized the man who had brought them the Christmas tree few nights ago. All of them were perplexed at the fact that Jim wanted Wumi to leave since he seemed quite close to Wumi.

“They are coming! You have to leave! All of you!” the man yelled as soon as he calmed down.

“What do you mean?” Sala asked worriedly.

“There had been an attack last night at the next village. A few children had been held hostage by the demons. The leader of the demons requested sacrifices,” the man paused for a while, trying to catch his breath, “they want teenagers in exchange for the children. And they want four.”

“Why us? Not that anyone deserved to be given to the demons as gifts or anything but why do we have to run?” Xiaomei asked.

“Well, the villagers refused to sacrifice any of their children and they wanted others in place. Someone told them about three outsiders living at Wumi’s and the only person not protected closely by the villagers was Wumi since he had no family,” Jim explained.

“You mean if we let them get us, we might be saying hi to some demons?” Sala asked excitedly.

“No way, Sala. You are not doing whatever it is you are thinking. I think I should go but then someone else might be hurt if we go,” Tress said thoughtfully. She did not want to endanger someone else if she could help it but she did not want Sala hurt. After all, she was supposed to be a guard, a ninja, protecting the royal family, just like her father.

“But…” Sala tried to protest but was stopped by Tress’s warning glare.

“Do you all think we should go?” Wumi asked as he looked at the others.

“I don’t know,” Xiaomei answered quietly.

“Me too. I don’t like the fact that someone is being hurt because I am not there to help. But I don’t like the fact that any of you might get hurt,” Tress said sadly.

“Just go! All of you! All of you are not involved in this and there should be no reason for you to be involved. Just go before it is too late,” Jim demanded, “all of you are young. You should not be involved in dangerous things like this.”

“But…” Sala was lost. Sure, she wanted to meet the demons, to study the cause of their appearance. Yet, she did not want anyone hurt because of her actions. She knew without doubt that Tress would have to protect her out of responsibility and so would the others.

“I don’t want anyone hurt,” Tress mumbled, not able to reach a decision.

“You know, I don’t really feel like running,” Wumi said.

“Me too,” Xiaomei said as well.

“Well, me three. It just doesn’t feel right,” Sala said as well.

“Me four? Are we still playing this game?” Tress asked, smiling a bit, “it seemed that all of us make up our mind. But then again, what about the danger?”

“Just be extra triple careful?” Sala answered, grinning.

“Well, I am sure I can handle a fight or more,” Wumi said, smirking, “after all, I am a hunter.”

“Me too. I am a ninja. I am trained,” Tress spoke, grinning.

“Ninja? Then why are you here with Sala?” Xiaomei asked, puzzled.

“Umm… no reason, me and Sala are childhood friends,” Tress replied. They are really childhood friends.

“Really?” Xiaomei asked suspiciously, “and don’t worry about me. I picked up some skills as I travel around.”

“And I have my wand,” Sala said confidentially, “and I do know how to use in regardless of how I look!”

“Well, that’s settled. So get back to breakfast and prepare for a fight?” Wumi suggested as he sat down, “don’t worry about us, Jim.”

They smiled at the bewildered man as they continued to prepare for the fight. Soon, there was a commotion outside the house. The four of them stood outside the house and smiled confidently at the visitors.

“So shall we?” Wumi asked, smirking.

~in a dark cave~

“So, it is starting,” Dusk grinned as she studied the four of them through the mirror, “soon, the four of them would be able to have powers and embarked on a journey.”

“I wonder who will go first?” Dusk asked as she looked at Remy who had finally stopped hiding from her, “courage? Knowledge? Love? Or hope?”

so how was it? individual chap for each char's trials....

“I am not afraid of monsters… I am not afraid of monsters…,” Dusk chanted in her mind as she continued to sprint in search of Remy, “I ran because I am looking for Remy, not because I am scared of monsters…”

Dusk ran as fast as she could while trying to convince herself that she was not afraid of monsters. However, she stopped when she thought it was safe and realized a big problem.

“Oh, shit! Where am I?” she screamed in frustration.

******in Wumi’s POV********

“I am Wumi,” I introduced myself to the three girls.

They smiled and were all rubbing their arms before one of them spoke first.

“I am Xiaomei,” the girl said simply. I noted the distinctive clothes she had on. It was not common around here. She must have traveled from somewhere.

“You are not from around here?” I asked, looking at the red oriental blouse and pants. Her hairstyle was also a hint. Not many girls would put their hair in two buns on her head.

“Yeah, I kind of travel around with a circus, not that I do any performance. Well, I pick out the skills and things,” Xiaomei answered as she turned to the other two girls, “I met the two of them in the forest earlier and we don’t really know where we are.”

“She means we are lost,” the other girl retorted, “I am Treasure but you can call me Tress. That’s Sala. We are traveling across this forest.”

“To reach the village?” I asked taking note of the other two girls’ clothes. Why would anyone want to go to the village was beyond me. That was nothing there.

“Actually no. Sala’s father is the…. umm…I mean a merchant,” Tress said stammering, “So you have to excuse her, she’s a bit pampered.”

“I am not!” the other girl, Sala, protested, “I have you know that I am not pampered! I can take care of myself!”

“Yes, you can,” Tress drawled with an exasperated look that said “you see what I am suffering from?”

“Anyway, we are supposed to run an errand or something and we thought we came and explored this forest. We heard that there were monsters appearing around here as well as other places? Is it true?” Sala continued, choosing to ignore Tress. After all, she knew she could get back at her sometime later.

“I have not met one myself lah,” I answered, smiling at her, “but I have heard stories about them.”

“You are not sure if we will meet one?” Sala asked hopefully. Somehow I had the feeling that she was hoping to meet one.

“Touch wood! I definitely do not want to meet one. But with our luck…” Tress trailed off.

“It’s not that easy to meet one lah. Of course if you want to stay here for the night, maybe you will,” I joked.

“Really? How about…” however, Tress cut in before Sala could continue.

“No! Sala, you can stay here if you want but not me!” Tress interrupted.

“What?” I asked a bit shocked that she really wanted to meet a monster. I mean who would want to meet a monster?

I must have looked really shocked cause I realized that Xiaomei was looking at me with a face of sympathy.

“Don’t worry. You will be used to it soon,” she replied, “by the way, do you know where we can find some shelter? I don’t think I will be able to find the troop tonight and… I don’t care what Sala thinks but I am with Tress. I don’t want to meet any monsters. I want to live till sixty.”

“Well, you all can stay at my place for a night? I have an empty room but you three have to share. It’s a big room though,” I suggested.

“Great!” Tress shouted in relief, “then let’s go. And don’t care about Sala. She can stay if she wants.”

Well, of course I led them out of the forest. I, for one, most definitely, did not want to encounter any monsters, especially now when it was dark. As we were walking I could hear the pair bickering with Xiaomei making some comments as well.

“Well, you have to see her Raindoll,” Tress said to Xiaomei, ignoring Sala.

“Why?” I asked I was curious too, “what Raindoll? A doll?”

“Well, let’s just say it is her pet. And I, for one, don’t want it anywhere near me,” Tress said simply.
“Why?” Xiaomei asked, puzzled. Well, I was feeling rather confused myself.

“Well, if you don’t want to die at twenty, maybe you would want to stay away from it. Well maybe all her pets,” Tress deadpanned.

“Pets?” I asked. I looked at Sala again. She was wearing a long pink dress that seemed to be of a very expensive material. Well, the people who I knew that had kept a lot of animals for entertainment were rich people. And from her tone and the way she held herself, I say she was from a well to do family.

“Hey! I have you know that Raindoll is just a sweet little bird and Wen and Xue are nice obedient puppies!” Sala protested. Guess she could see the look of disbelief on both my face as well as Xiaomei’s, “they really are!”
“My dear, Raindoll, the sweet little bird you are talking about is a fierce parrot that is very noisy even in the middle of a night. And the two nice puppies, Wen and Xue, are actually called cubs! They are growing up to be lions whether you like that or not!” Tress said, exasperated. It seemed that they had been having this conversation before.

“Parrot? You mean they said what you say? Cool!” Xiaomei commented, her eyes glinted with excitement, “I wish I have a parrot too!”

“Yes, Raindoll’s so sweet and she is really intelligent,” Sala said happily.

“Well that’s only because you don’t have to listen to it in the middle of the night. That bird never sleeps in the nights,” Tress muttered, “it says the things one does not want to listen all the
time.”

“Hey! I know you don’t really hate Raindoll! I saw you giving it treats after it insulted the commander for you!” Sala protested and smirking, she added, “and I saw you playing with Wen Xue just the other day! And sometimes, I feel that they like you more than me!”

“That’s what you say!” Tress retorted.

“Hey what commander? Are you two in the military or what?” I could not help asking. I could not help noticing the clothes of Tress were so different from Sala. And there was still the way Tress carried herself that was different from Sala. She looked as if she was more of bodyguard instead of a lady from a rich family. It was almost like she was a… ninja I think…

“Umm…” Sala seemed to hesitate while Tress just found the ground suddenly very interesting.

“Actually, that’s our … teacher… yeah! Our teacher! He kind of likes to boss people around so we call him that. Not that he knew,” Sala explained with weak laughter.

However, I could not help feeling that there was something the two of them were hiding from us. Then again, I guess no one tells others everything about themselves at the first meeting.

“Well we are reaching,” I said to break the uncomfortable tension.

It seemed to work as the others smiled in relief. I led them towards my cottage. It was small and had only few rooms. But I lived alone and it was more than enough. Well, there used to be him. But then he… was … gone…

“Well home sweet home,” I said simply. However, I remembered….

“Hey, home sweet home, brother! Where have you been?”

“Nowhere! I’m starving lah! Where’s the food?”

“When are you not?”

“Wumi?” a voice broke into my thoughts, “are you okay?”

“Of course I am lah!” I smiled as I led them into the cottage, brandishing the thoughts of my brother away from my mind.

******still in the forest******

“Hey it’s dark,” Dusk muttered, “how am I going to find Remy in the dark?”

She looked around again yet, there was no way to know where she was at.

“Haiz!” she sighed, “guess I just have to keep on walking. Stupid forest! I swear that there must be magic to make people lost in this forest! Stupid forest!”

And she went on and on…..

******in the dark******

“Okay, Remy, now we need to do this,” Dusk whispered, “and we can’t fail. After all this spell is easy enough.”

Dusk started to draw a spell circle with only the glow of the small fire at one corner of the cave. However, it seemed a bit too dark as she tried hard to draw properly. It took some time but at least she did it.

“Yes!” she exclaimed in relief, “here we go, Remy, hey! Stop eating at that walnut and help me!”

She started to chant a spell using the language of the elf clan. Soon she ended the chant and dropped to the ground in exhaustion. Well, after all this was the first time she used a simple spell on such a great area.

“Well they are not getting out so soon and I need some rest. Maybe I can take a nap,” she mumbled as she lay on the floor.

However, it was then she felt something wet and slippery in her hair. Slowly, she took out the thing and she realized what the thing was in the glow of the fire.

“Remy! That is your half-eaten walnut! With all your saliva! Come back here, you!” she screamed, “See what you have done to my hair!”

However, on hearing her screams, the clever squirrel only ran faster. Cursing after her squirrel, Dusk chased after it out of the cave and into the forest.

*****in the forest*****

“Umm… I think… it is this way,” Xiaomei pointed to the right.

“And why, I wonder?” Sala asked as she dragged her feet down the right path.

“Cause right is right, right?” Xiaomei replied with a grin.

Sala groaned at her reply and kneeled on the ground, “I’m beat and we are lost!”

“We are not lost!” Xiaomei protested but she added quietly, “we just don’t know where we are.”

“That is the definition of lost, Miss Xiaomei,” Tress complained, “and we have been walking in circles for hours!”

“Of course we are not. Don’t be silly, “Xiaomei said quickly.

“Well, we are,” Tress pointed to a marking on the tree she was leaning against, “see that t marking? I made it just now while we were resting at this exact spot!”

“What? You mean all this walking and we are back to square one?” Sala complained as she threw her hands up, “I think I am dying.”

“Hey is it just me? I have a feeling that there is something weird?” Tress asked as she looked around their surrounding.

“I don’t know I feel that there might be magic around,” Sala replied as she felt the small waves of energy coursing through the air.

“Hey the report says that the monsters emit energy waves when they are approaching. Do you think?” Tress asked fearfully.

“Look behind you!” Xiaomei shouted suddenly, pointing behind Sala.

Both Tress and Sala jumped in surprise and sprinted away from where they were standing earlier. However, when they calmed down and looked at that spot, there was nothing and Xiaomei was laughing hard.

“Umm…. Kidding?” she said between her chuckles.

“Hey! Do you know that people can be scare to death?” Sala snapped at Xiaomei, “This is so not funny.”

The two of them glared at the laughing girl, waiting for her to stop laughing. Hey were embarrassed at falling for a prank like this. However, they had come to the forest in search for the monsters. Knowing that they really were here, it made them kinda of jumpy.
“Sorry,” Xiaomei said sheepishly after a long round of laughter but she added cheerfully, “it’s not that easy to meet one. Don’t worry.”

“You are one optimistic girl,” Sala said, resigned.

“And you are one pessimistic girl,” Xiaomei replied her.

“Well, I have you know that I,” however she was cut off as Tress stepped on her right foot, “ouch!”

“Opps, I’m so sorry!” Tress apologized with a fake look of concern as she sat besides Sala and whispered to her, “I thought we agreed that neither of us is going to expose our identities?”

“Of course I remember!” Sala hissed, “You don’t have to step on me!”

“Too late!” Tress grinned in mischief as she stood and said, “hey let’s get going. It is getting dark.”

“So fast! We only rest for a while. Just five more minutes?” Sala complained.

“Well, of course you can stay here. But if the monsters eat you up, it’s not my fault,” Tress said as she stuck her tongue out of Sala who stuck hers out in protest.

“Well, that’s great lizard communication we have,” Sala muttered.

“Hey you two are being childish, let’s go,” Xiaomei voiced her opinion as she stood up and ready to go, “I don’t want to spend the night in the dark forest with only the three of us.”

“Well, miss we-are-not-lost, where do you think we are going then?” Sala complained though she did not like to sleep in the dark either.

“Let’s just try our luck? And we go right again?” Xiaomei answered as they stood in front of a fork path again.

“I heard from somewhere that when you are in a maze, always stick to the right,” Tress commented but unsure about which way to go.

“But we are not in a maze. We are in a forest,” Xiaomei remarked as she studied the two ways.

It was then a twig dropped on the left path from behind them. The two of them looked back and found Sala smirking at them.

“Well, since the twig has decided for us, let’s go and get out of the forest! It really is getting dark,” Sala went past the two of them and continued walking.

“Your friend?” Tress asked Xiaomei as the two of them followed Sala’s lead.

“No I thought yours? Why would anyone just throw a twig and follow it?” Xiaomei asked in disbelief.

“You are looking at one,” Tress answered as she caught up with Sala, “you sure about going this way?”

“Of course I am! We are walking now, aren’t we?” Sala smiled, “after all what was worse than staying the night in the forest?”

“Well, a lot I can think of,” Tress replied, “like monsters or.”

However she was cut off by a scream from Sala. Instinctively, she caught Sala’s arm as Sala fell, dragging her down. Behind them, Xiaomei who had heard the scream dashed to them but only managed to catch Tress’s right arm. Then she grabbed a branch from a nearby tree, causing them to be suspended in a human chain.

It was actually funny in a morbid way as the three of them swayed. However, in a death and life situation, humor never existed. They had fallen from the cliff.

“Don’t let go!” Xiaomei shouted at the two.

“I won’t and Sala, you were saying just now that it can’t get worse?” Tress said with a hint of humor though she was trembling with the tension and pressure.

“Don’t remind me and it’s a long way down!” Sala screamed.

“Can’t you do anything? Your magic?” Tress shouted to be heard over the howling wind that seemed to pick up as they hang there.

“I can’t reach for my wand!” Sala screamed as hysteria started to weave through her body, “you are the one with the skills! Do something!”

“I don’t know what! Scream for help?” Tress suggested as the wind did get stronger.

“I am slipping!” Xiaomei yelled in horror as they started to scream for help.

It seemed like forever. The place started to get dark and soon they felt tired and their hands were slipping.

Just when they had about to give up hope, suddenly there was a rope thrown down from the cliff. As if unsure the three of them were frozen.

“Did you two see what I am seeing? Or is this my imagination?” Sala asked in disbelief.

“Well, if it is your imagination, it is mine too,” Tress confirmed, “well? Try to touch it and grabbed it.”

Slowly, Sala reached for the rope, pulling it slightly.

“Hey, it is real and secured!” Sala shouted in joy.

Slowly she made her way up, followed by Tress and finally Xiaomei. They fell onto the top and basked in the joy that they were saved.

“Well, one thing I know is that living is great,” Tress exclaimed as the other two nodded.

“So are you three alright?” A voice said from behind them.

They turned to see a boy around their age with the rope that had just saved them in his hands. They looked at him, puzzled and then at the rope. Apparently, he had been the person who had saved him.

“well, if you mean heart pumping at the speed of sound and still recovering from the ache in the arm as alright, I guess we are alright,” Tress answered with a grin, “and thanks a lot for saving us.”

“Yeah, thanks a lot!” Sala said gratefully, “that is a messy way to die. How do you find us? Heard our nice panicky screaming?”

“Not really actually. The wind is too strong for you to be heard. I was on the other side and saw the human chain from there. I did rush here as soon as possible,” the boy replied with a smile, “I am Wumi.”

**** On the other side of the forest****

“Hey, Remy, where are you?” Dusk demanded.

She had been searching for the irritating squirrel for the last hour and she was very sure that it was laughing at her somewhere.

“Stupid squirrel! It is dark and I need my beauty sleep so come out!” Dusk yelled again.

There was rustling behind her and she smiled. No one escape from the princess elf named Dusk.

“Haha! Got you!” she said as she turned.

However, what greeted her was not Remy but rather a monster that she knew was lurking around the forest somewhere. She stood frozen for a moment before she broke into a run, cursing “stupid Remy!”

*******in the dark**********

“It’s time, Dusk,” a soft voice said, “It’s time for your journey to start.”

“Yes, Elder,” Dusk’s younger voice replied respectfully.

“Do you know what you are supposed to do?” Elder asked.

“Of course,” Dusk answered then she muttered softly, “you have been nagging all the time. How can I even forget?”

“What did you say, Dusk?” Elder demanded.

“Nothing except that you have explained what I am supposed to do in such a way that I will never forget,” Dusk said with a smile that seemed just too fake on her face.

“Then get going,” Elder snapped, “I will communicate with you with Remy if the need arises.”

“Of course, Elder, I am going,” Dusk said respectfully but muttered, “I am dying to get out of your old lady’s nagging.”

“I heard that, Dusk!” Elder screamed as the pressure in the air changed, “how dare you call me an old lady!”

“Shit! Remy! Let’s get out of here!” with that Dusk ran out of the exit with her faithful squirrel, Remy behind her. Just before a loud explosion occurred.

***********in the forest***********

“Tress! I can’t walk anymore! Let’s stop!” Princess Sala screamed at her friend walking in front of her.

“We just stopped earlier! Just walk faster and get over it earlier!” Treasure, also known as Tress, ignored her friend’s whims and continued on.

“Well, you are a ninja and are used to walking but I am a princess! I don’t need to walk so much before!” Sala complained.

Tress slowed down and signed, “Don’t ask me to pity you. You asked for it when you made me bring you to the forest. And I say again, it was your idea to get out of the palace. You threatened me to get you out. So it is not my fault. Though I still don’t understand how I let you talk mi into that. I am a ninja. I am supposed to be one of the palace’s protectors. How did I end up here?”

“Well, because you know me? I am sorry, Tress. Don’t be angry, please?” Sala said sadly as her eyes suddenly lit up, “I treat you to chocolate? I know I have a bar somewhere in my pouch.”

“Really?” Tress asked happily before she put on a mock glare, “hey! I am supposed to be angry with you!”

“Well, let’s forget all that and focused on this journey,” Sala changed the subject abruptly as she scanned around the forest, “do you think there really are monsters here?”

“I don’t know but we will have to continue to walk to find out, now shall we? If your highness can even walk?” Tress asked with a glint of mischief in her eyes.

“Hey! I have you know that I, Princess Sala, can handle anything in the world even if a monster suddenly appeared in front of me,” Sala said haughtily with her nose in the air as she waved her fan.

Tress snorted as she asked, “oh really, then why make me come along on this trip, your highness?”

“Hey, I am a sorcerer. I can control the wind. I ask you for company not protection. In fact I will protect you if a monster suddenly,” Sala’s sentence turned into a scream as something fell onto her, causing her to fall to the ground.

“Sara!” Tress screamed as she dashed to help the fallen princess, “are you alright?”

However, as she made out what happened, she could not stop laughing at the strangeness of this situation. It was so funny. It seemed that someone had fallen out of the tree right onto the princess.

“Well, I have heard of angels falling out of the sky but not people,” she commented as she stood laughing at the rapidly becoming red faces.

“Hey! Some help here!” Sala yelled at the laughing girl.

“Okay, Sala. But you have to admit that it is funny. After all, you are lucky that she is a girl,” Tress said as she helped the girl to get up, “hi. Are you alright?”

“I am okay,” the girl replied, embarrassed, “sorry for nearly killing you.”

“It’s okay. She does not get killed that easily,” Tress answered for Sala.

“Well, I hope so cause I am sure I am not that light. Oh, I am Xiaomei.” The girl introduced herself as Tress helped Sala up.

“I am Tress and that is Sala. We are just walking around the forest,” Tress answered.

“Well, I am a performer. I was practicing for my new moves and I took a short nap on the tree. Guess this is the first and last time I tried that,” Xiaomei joked good-naturedly.

Soon the three of them were laughing and joking. Xiaomei offered the two of them a place to stay temporarily.

Unknown to them, someone was watching them as they made their way to the camp of Xiaomei and her troupe.

“Do you think they are the one, Remy? If they are, we will need to take action and find the last one,” the elf whispered quietly as she followed the trio. Somehow, she had the feeling that it was going to be a tough journey.
