* My Beloved Hainan!! *
Reiko went to Hainan for about 10days, and it was a fabulous experience. It was so nice, that I didn't want to come back to Singapore, despite Singapore being so developed and clean and so good for shopping. I had relatives there. My grandma, grandpa, and cousins were all there. Before going to Hainan, I was not having any expectations that it would be fun. In fact, I even thought that I would miss the counting down for new year in Singapore. But I was surprised, and I love surprises. :)
I will be talking about my Hainan trip in Reiko's own style, and I hope you will like my very long blog entry :)
Chapter 1: Heading to Hainan island
I am going to Hainan island! Before boarding the plane, I took photos in the airport immediately after stepping into it. You couldn't help not to take photos in Singapore's airport. It's indeed very very pretty. :)
I wore my sunny sarong dress, and was looking forward to the trip. I am happy that I would be sitting on an airplane again! It's so addictive. :) This time, I didn't have any fear, and I totally enjoyed the experience of flying. My sister called me a bookworm, because I was reading the whole time on the plane. Guess what I was reading? haha.. (Answer will be revealed at the end of this entry!)

The above photo shows me and my dad. We took pictures with the nice western green traditional christmas tree. It's a beautiful festive plant. Don't you think?
Anyway after taking photos, my dad went to buy cigarettes and alcohol for my relatives. It's quite common to smoke there. (something I realized when I stayed there). Another common thing that some people at Hainan like to do, is to chew on 槟榔. It's acidic I heard, so it's not really a healthy snack. On the floor of the streets, you can see bright, dried red spits of 槟榔, and there's this aunty who sits by the road, selling 槟榔. NOT sexy ladies, mind you. It's a normal aunty. :)
It takes around 3-4hours(forgot!) to reach hainan, and when we reached the place, you will need to show your passport to get out. They have this photo taking/video cam thing that is situated directly in front of your face at the counter. It is used to check if you are the person in your passport photo, or some illegal migrant in disguise. lol.. It's quite funny, because I almost wanted to laugh when I see my face. It makes me wana smile, coz I am used to 自拍, but you can't really smile, coz it's a serious atmosphere. You don't want to be detained!
Anyway, once we "enter" Hainan, my 堂哥and姑丈came to pick us up. How do you travel in Hainan? They booked this dark green lorry, which belonged to a friend, who has a shop near our shophouse. Oh ya, we sell clothes. :) It's super squeeeeeezy in the lorry and 4 ppl sat at the back, and my dad sat at the front, with my 堂姐's son, who is super cute, and super giddy, coz he haven't eaten since 12pm!!! And we reached at around 5plus plus to 6! No wonder he is giddy!
The ride back takes around 1.5hours. But I thought it was much longer. My buttock is 僵硬. lol.. But I was very excited.
Interesting sightings along the way to my house, include the following:
1. Trees that can be used to produce paper, which totally look like giant vegetables, because the tree trunk is slim/thin, and only the top is scarcely packed with leaves. lol.. That's the first type of tree that caught my attention in Hainan.
2. The evening stays for a long time. You know it is evening time, the light is all fading away, but it is truly an evening, for the colours of the sky is amber, and it fades out really slowly. For a long time, the light from the sun still stays on in part of the sky, before it becomes really dark, and you would have thought that some ghost might be spotted among the trees.
When we finally reach the house, I was very very happy to see my grandma and grandpa!!! I haven't seen them for ages! Then, I was brought to our room. I shared the room with my sis and my grandma. I clapped my hands when I heard this, coz it would be nice to sleep with your grandma, if you had done it before, and haven't done it for a super long time. There were two separate beds, so me and my sis shared one. We have a balcony in the room, where we could hang the clothes to dry. It's beautiful. I love it. :)

After bathing, I took at my first photo with my 堂嫂, who is a super super super nice woman. I'll talk about it later..

After that, the kids came! lol.. 大宣(my nephew) was totally 活泼 after eating dinner, and it seemed like he did not feel giddy at all just now. The neighbour's kid came too. She is called 梦蝶, and I told her: 那你知不知道庄周梦蝶? which, I know is lame. lol.. I wanted to take photos with them, and that made them run around and around and around, because 梦蝶 didnt wana take photos. lol.. And so I played catching with them with my "monster" camera. HAHA! They even hid under the bed!
Eventually I took a photo with 大宣. He made a funny face, and I told him to smile properly, using my 老师 firmness, resulting in the following totally kawaii photo. wahaha..
Chapter 2: A beautiful morning with my relatives
The next morning, I woke up earlier than my sis, who displayed her sleep late power throughout the entire trip except for one day. haha.. My other relatives had come to visit us! My 姨婆 was there as well. She is one woman I admire. If you know 王熙凤, she is one kind. Shrewd, and capable, I bet she can be a businesswoman/entrepreneur, if she is younger. She was my idol of a strong capable woman, until somebody else replaced her 宝座. haha.. She's loud, in fact the grandma-aged people, even my 堂嫂 can speak really loud. For example in the village(which I will be talking about later) she can say something so loud, that the woman standing across a rice field can hear. Very powerful right! So admirable!! I was totally impressed, and learnt to speak loud as well. haha..
In the middle is my grandma, and on the right is my 姨婆。 The granny at the left, is also a relative, but I duno how to explain who she is. haha..
This cute little girl is 大宣's cousin. SOOOOOOOOO cute right!!!!!
But I think her sister is the MOST CUTE!!! She is called 小潘..... AHHHHH so cute!!!
Look at her when she smiles! Isn't she like an apple~ :)

Chapter 3: Interesting Sightings around the area near
Actually it's all at one area. lol.. There's this place near the place where they slaughter pigs, that rear many chickens and goose. They walk about freely here.
So many chickens! They have absolutely beautiful feathers, but it's very sad, because they would be killed one day, and that's very very sad.

I also spotted very funny posters on the walls. Funny in some way. haha..

They also sell sugarcane here. Anyway, in the market, what the people sell are not all grown by them. They sell vegetables that they had gotten from somewhere else, and there are some aunties and uncles who squat at the outside of the wet market, and sell radish, vegetables in baskets. These would be home grown. Very amazing to see so much fresh vegetables!

Chapter 4: “我们到乡下去~” Journey to the village
That afternoon, we went to the village. In this chapter, I'll be sharing about interesting crops that I saw. My 堂嫂 told me all these. hehe..
How do you get to the village?? You don't get there by car or lorry. But you sit on motorcycle operated vehicles, which they called 三轮车 or 风踩车 over there. It's a short(short in the perspective of traveling by vehicle) distance from the town. The place where this village is situated in, is called 文朗村, and this whole place including the town is called 龙滚镇, which is a part of a bigger place called万宁.
From big to small:
文朗村 is my village.. When you sit on this 三轮车, the wind is supeeeeeeerrrrrr strong!!!!!!!! I mean it! Your hair feels as if it's gona blow off. haha.. On my way back, I sat on this vehicle again, and something got in my left eye, and I thought I was going blind. lol.. It's an insect that flew in.
But on my way there, it was really nice, even though the wind is strong. So I took alot of photos. I got darker at the end of the day. Or so I feel. hehe.. :)
That's the 鞭炮 we were going to lit after we pray to our ancestors.

Chapter 5:

The house that I would be featuring now, is our old house! Here in the house, there is alot of family photos, all hanging on the wall. There are old and new photos. I saw photos of me, when I was super small. So cute! I love the idea of hanging these photos. It's like saying that we are all one big family. This is the place where my cousins and dad grew up in. It is a family house full of memories. I bet it's super 热闹during CNY. hehe..

Once inside the house, a table was set up, and we prayed to the ancestor, by burning 3 joss sticks, and bowing to the front 3 times. The offerings are coffee and assorted sweets and biscuits, which were shared at the end of the offering. That is when I ate the nicest sweet ever. This would later become souvenirs for my friends. It's a coconut sweet with a rich taste. It tastes like 蛋卷, except it is in the form of sweet.
I explored the place, and here's the kitchen! It's super traditional, and you use 柴 to create fire for cooking. How to start the fire?? Fire starter? NO! You start the fire using dried coconut leaves(or other dried parts. Abit forgot.. hehe..), and use the 柴 to continue burning. There is really the bamboo thing which you use to blow, so the fire can become stronger. But the stove isn't used for so long, that there is dust collected on top of the cover...

There are many interesting inventions in the house. For example the following device was formally a well. Then they changed it into a system that can be used to draw water, and then when you open the tap, water will flow out. Talking about water, the water in China is super cold. I have no idea why. But in Beijing, and Hainan, they felt sort of like water cooler water. hehe..
I wandered out of the house, following my grandma, and saw many old ladies playing a gambling game. I smiled and greeted them. Didnt know how to converse well in Hainan language. But I could understand abit. So it was ok. hehe.. Then my grandma took me to the back of the house, where we grew crops. She said it was called "man dor". And I didn't know what it was. Do you know what that is?

After awhile, my 堂嫂took me to this backyard again, and then I knew what these crops were. They are young 槟榔树! These are just babies, and one day they will be shifted to a broader place near the rice fields and hill area. That's where they would grow into really tall 槟榔树. It's amazing, because my cousin and his wife grew all sorts of crops, including 槟榔、胡椒、辣椒 and other 菜, and they did it all on their own, just 2 person. Amazing!
Taking a photo with the 槟榔
I also spotted very funny posters on the walls. Funny in some way. haha..

Back to the house! My sis showed me to this alley. Guess where it leads to?

It leads to this messy room, which is where the chickens were previously reared. No more chickens now. haha..

After much exploring, it's time to set up the fire crackers!! My 堂哥and dad did the setting up, while I took photos. hehe..
I requested my sis to do this "I am amazed look". hehe..

Saw the beautiful sky while I squatted at the same place as my sis, and look up to the sky.

It's super loud when it's lit and doing all the cracking. lol.. So I couldnt do anything, except put my hands on both of my ears, and take a photo at the end of it. One or two of the thing didnt crack completely, and all of a sudden explode later on. That was surprising. haha..
Pretty smoooooky at the end of it. :)
Ok, the next thing that I found interesting, is this bee "rearing" thing, that makes honey. Yum! How does it work? You would have to catch the bee Queen! And then the rest of the bees would follow. According to the villagers, the bees wont sting. But some say they will. So I am not sure. But it's not in use anymore. It's totally amazing to me. :)
Being observant and curious, I wondered why there is a chinese word written at the front of the vehicle number. 原来, that is used to identify where this vehicle came from. 琼stands for Hainan island, as they have a place called 琼海, which is a more city place, and sells more things. There are A,B,C after 琼, representing the specific place that it came from. So on the road in china, you can even spot 黑 in front of the vehicle number. But I have no idea what 黑means?

Not only do you hear the chickens, you see piglets and giant pigs too. I am very very scared of the female giant pigs, because when I think of them being slaughtered, I felt very disgusted.

If you read what I wrote previously, you would have read about the young 槟榔. In the following pic, you will see the tall 槟榔树. The difference between 槟榔 and 椰子, is the trunks. 椰子 is more woody.

The stone blocks are used to grow pepper. I was surprised to know that pepper is a climbing sorta plant.
To protect the young pepper, dried coconut leaves were made into a shelter kinda thing, and this is exactly the same material used to set up fire if needed.
They have bamboo here too! The bamboo can be made into alot of things. The stick used at my house, to lift the hanger to the metal chain used to hang clothes, is also made of bamboo. hehe..

Chapter 7:

Chapter 8:

Chapter 9:

Oh yeah!!!

有些地方的沙却是软的,细的!I love the sea!!

Chapter 11:

Chapter 12:
Chapter 13:

Chapter 14:

Chapter 11:
Chapter 12:
Chapter 13:
Chapter 14:
Chapter 15: The New Railway!

Chapter 16:

P.S. Was reading 红楼梦 on plane.. hehe..
