Shuang Fei's FairyLand

*双飞比较红*

Hi! Welcome to shuang fei bi jiao hong! The leo girls will bring u all to the fairytale land this week! Excited? Or bored as u may think it's the same boring old thing. Girls stuff.. wat is so interesting about it? Hope we can bring u back to ur childhood memories and change ur perception towards these lovely stories! Ok.. now the magical journey starts as I start off by introducing u all to my top 3 favourite fairytales or folklore. :)

First I have to say that my knowledge of fairytales is quite limited as those stories which I know are mostly told by my elder brothers. Haha.. the few books which I read were probably only ugly ducking, Cinderella and the little match girl. Pathetic rite? Cos when I was small, I didn't know there's such thing as English storybooks till when I enrolled into pri school. Previously I juz played with toys or watched Chinese dramas. Haha..

So here's my favourite top 3 fairytales. U would have all know the story very well.

Little Match Girl

Here's a little plot synopsis to refresh ur memory. It was night on New Year’s Eve, and a poor, little match girl was out on the streets selling matches. Although she was cold and hungry, with neither hat nor shoes, she was afraid to go home as her father would surely beat her when he found out she did not sell any matches that day.

In a nook between two buildings, she wanted to warm herself by lighting matches. In the light of the first match she saw a hot iron stove, but the fire was soon blown out by the howling wind. She lit a second match and saw a fully laden dinner table with delicious foods and a roasted goose that came slowly toward her. It too disappeared as the match went out. By the light of the third match she saw a beautiful Christmas tree lit with a million candles. The candle lights went higher and higher until they became stars. One became a shooting star and she remembered her grandmother telling her that a shooting star means a person has passed away and gone to heaven.

Upon lighting the fourth match she saw her smiling grandmother, the only person who ever loved her. This filled her with so much joy she quickly lit the next match and the next so that her grandmother never fades. Finally, the grandmother took the happy girl in her arms and they flew higher and higher to a place where there's no cold, no hunger, no fear.

The next morning, the little girl was found dead in the snow with a smile upon her lips. “She wanted to warm herself!” people exclaimed as they noticed the burned out matches littered around her body. However, no one knew what beauty she had seen or with what glory she had gone with her grandmother into a joyous new year.

My review: Very sad right? It's a really sad but beautiful story. Though I don't like sad endings, but the little girl really touches me. She doesn't have the luck to enjoy luxury like normal princesses in fairytales. She is determined, pitiful as she needs to sell all her matchsticks under such harsh conditions. I think it's a pleasant ending as she reunites with her grandmother in heaven. A happiness in disguise. I also love Xiong Tian Ping's version of the song "huo chai tian tang".

Snow white and the seven dwarfs

A kind princess. Let's now look at the story!

Once upon a time, a queen was doing needle work while staring outside her window at the beautiful snow. It was because of her distracted state that she pricked her finger on her needle and a drop of blood fell on some snow that had fallen on her windowsill. As she looked at the blood on the snow she said to herself, "Oh, how I wish that I had a daughter that had skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony." Soon after that, the queen gave birth to a baby girl who had skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony. They named her Princess Snow White. The queen soon died, perhaps in childbirth.

Soon after, the king took a new wife who was beautiful, but very vain, and who possessed supernatural powers. She also possessed a magical mirror, to whom she would often ask, "Looking glass upon the wall, Who is fairest of us all?" and to which the mirror would always reply, "'tis you" But after Snow White became seven (which is the official age wherein a girl becomes a maiden) when she asked her mirror, it responded, "Queen, you are full fair, 'tis true, But Snow-White fairer is than you."
The Queen was jealous, and ordered a huntsman to take Snow White into the woods to be killed. She demanded that the huntsman return with Snow White's heart as proof. The huntsman took Snow White into the forest, but found himself unable to kill the girl. Instead, he let her go, and brought the queen the heart of a young deer or a pig.

Snow White discovered a tiny cottage in the forest, belonging to seven dwarfs, where she rested. Meanwhile, the Queen asked her mirror once again, "Who's the fairest of them all?", and was horrified when the mirror told her that Snow White, who was alive and well and living with the dwarfs, was still the fairest of them all.

3 times the Queen disguised herself and visited the dwarfs' cottage trying to kill Snow White. First, disguised as a peddler, the Queen offered colorful stay-laces and laced Snow White up so tight that she fainted, and the Queen took her for dead. Snow White was revived by the dwarfs when they loosened the laces. Next, the Queen dressed as a different old woman and combed Snow White's hair with a poisoned comb. Snow White again collapsed, and again the dwarfs saved her. Lastly the Queen made a poisoned apple, and in the disguise of a countrywoman offered it to Snow White. She was hesitant, so the Queen cut the apple in half, ate the white part — which had no poison — and gave the poisoned red part to Snow White. She ate the apple eagerly and immediately fell into a deep stupor. When the dwarfs found her, they could not revive her, so they placed her in a glass coffin, thinking that she had died.

Time passed, and a prince travelling through the land saw Snow White in her coffin. The prince was enchanted by her beauty and instantly fell in love with her. He begged the dwarfs to let him have the coffin. The prince and his men carried the coffin away, but as they went they stumbled. The coffin jerked and the piece of poison apple flew out of Snow White's mouth, awakening her. The prince then declared his love and soon a wedding was planned.

The vain Queen, still believing that Snow White was dead, again asked her mirror who was fairest in the land and yet again the mirror disappointed her by responding that, "You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But the young queen is a thousand times fairer than you."
Not knowing that this new queen was indeed her stepdaughter, she arrived at the wedding, and her heart filled with the deepest of dread when she realized the truth.

As punishment for her wicked ways, a pair of heated iron shoes were brought forth with tongs and placed before the Queen. She was then forced to step into these and dance until she fell down dead. In later versions, the Queen's death was the result of destroying her mirror in a fit of rage upon hearing that there still is one fairer then her. In yet another version, when the Queen sees Snow White and realizes the truth, she goes insane and kills herself. In one more version, the mirror shows the Queen Snow White, or tells her Snow White is more beautiful by name, and the Queen runs so fast to kill Snow White that she dies from the exertion, at Snow White's feet. In Disney's adaption of the story, the queen falls to her death while attempting to crush the dwarves with a boulder.

My review: This story introduces the idea of "jealousy" to me. As a child, I was naive to think that all evil people will be punished like what happened to the evil Queen. Snow white is my idol as she is so beautiful (her skin is so fair) and she is kind-hearted too. I'm also envious that she has nice friends (7 dwarfs) by her side. Her sweet encounter with the handsome prince becomes a classic to us. Poison apple can kill so don't be easily deceived by people!

Little mermaid

The Little Mermaid lives at the sea bottom with her father the Sea King, her grandmother, and her five older sisters, born one year apart. When a mermaid turns 15, she is allowed to swim to the surface to watch the world above, and as the sisters become old enough one of them visits the surface every year. As each of them returns the Little Mermaid listens longingly to their descriptions of the surface and human beings.

When the Little Mermaid turns 15 she ventures to the surface. She sees a ship with a handsome prince, and falls in love with him from a distance. There comes a great storm, and the prince almost drowns, but the Little Mermaid saves him and she delivers him unconscious to the shore near a temple. Here she waits until he is found by a young girl from the temple. The prince never sees the Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid asks her grandmother whether humans can live forever if they do not drown. She is told that no, humans have an even shorter lifespan than mermaids. Mermaids live for 300 years, but when they die they turn to sea foam and cease to exist. Humans, on the other hand, have a short lifespan on earth, but they have an eternal soul that lives on in heaven even after they die. The Little Mermaid spends her days longing for the prince and for an eternal soul. At last she goes to the Sea Witch who sells her a potion that gives her legs, in exchange for her tongue; the Little Mermaid has the most intoxicating voice in the world. But drinking the potion will make her feel like a sword is being passed through her, and walking on her feet will feel like walking on knives. And she will only get a soul if the prince loves her and marries her, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries another woman, the Little Mermaid will die broken-hearted and turn to sea foam like other merfolk.

The Little Mermaid drinks the potion and meets the prince, who is attracted to her beauty and grace even though she is mute. Most of all he likes to see her dance and she dances for him even though it feels like dancing on knives. The prince loves her like one loves a child.

The time comes when the king decides that the prince is to marry the neighboring king's daughter. The prince tells the Little Mermaid that he will not marry the princess because he does not love her. He can only love the young girl who once saved his life, the girl who unfortunately belongs to the temple. He also tells the Little Mermaid that she is beginning to take the temple girl's place in his heart. However, it turns out that the princess is the temple girl; she had only been sent to the temple to be educated. The prince loves her and the wedding is announced.

The prince and princess are married and the Little Mermaid's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has given up in order to be with the prince and to gain an eternal soul - her beautiful voice, her wonderful home, her loving family, her life - and of all the pain that she has suffered; all without the prince ever having a thought thereof. She despairs, but before dawn her sisters come to her and give her a knife that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their hair. If the Little Mermaid slays the prince with the knife she will become a mermaid again and be able to live out her full life under the sea.

But the Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his bride and, as dawn breaks, throws herself into the sea. Here her body dissolves into sea foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warmth of the sun; she has turned into a spirit, a daughter of the air. The other daughters of the air tell her that she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to gain an eternal soul. As a mermaid her gaining of a soul was dependent on another: the prince; but as a daughter of the air she will earn her own soul by doing good deeds. When 300 years have passed she will have earned her soul and will rise into the kingdom of God. This time can be shortened; with each good child she finds she subtracts a year, while she adds a day for each tear she must shed over a wicked child.

My review: It's such a sad story. Think there's another version which the prince and the mermaid is together. Love has no boundaries, no restriction rite? This version is sad as the mermaid did not get her true love despite all her effort.

Now let us peek at Reina's favourite fairy tales!

MY FAVOURITE FAIRYTALES!

Here are MY favourite fairytales. To tell the truth, I am a super fan of fairytales when I was a young girl. Now still very young la..thing is, when I am in Primary school, I read A LOT of stories. I not only read Enid Blyton, or Sweet valley, but also fairytales from different parts of the world, like China, Germany, England, Japan…etc. That’s why I am such a romantic girl. Hahaha..self claimed. Anyway, if I could, I will include so many different fairytales! Coz 3 just isn’t enough! Nevertheless, I managed to choose 3 stories that I can remember and I like. It doesn’t mean these 3 are the best out of all the stories, but I prefer them to be in my choices, as their stories have really special plots. Haha..But one thing is for sure! My everlasting, ultimate fairytale is CINDERELLA. That’s the most fantastic fairytale! Okie, here are my 3 choices, and a summary of the story, sourced from wikipedia.com. The weblink of the material is at the end of each story. Enjoy my fairytale moments!

CINDERELLA

Once there was a widower who married a proud and haughty woman for his second wife. She had two daughters, who were equally haughty. By his first wife, he had a beautiful young daughter of unparalleled goodness and sweet temper. Along with her daughters, the Stepmother employed the daughter in all the housework. When the girl had done her work, she sat in the cinders, which caused her to be called "Cinderella". The poor girl bore it patiently, but dared not tell her father, who would have scolded her; for his wife controlled him entirely.

The Prince invited all maidens in the land to a ball. As the two Stepsisters were invited, they gleefully planned their wardrobes. Cinderella assisted them, but they still taunted her by saying a cinderwench could never attend a ball.

As the sisters swept away to the ball, Cinderella cried in despair. Her Fairy Godmother appeared and vowed to assist Cinderella in attending the ball. She turned a pumpkin into a coach, mice into horses, a rat in to a coachman, and lizards into footmen. She then turned Cinderella's rags into a beautiful gown, complete with a delicate pair of glass slippers. The Godmother bade her enjoy the ball, but return before midnight for the spells would be broken.
At the ball, the entire court was entranced by Cinderella, especially the Prince, who never left her side. Unrecognized by her sisters, Cinderella remembered to leave before midnight.
Back home, Cinderella thanked her Godmother. She then greeted the Stepsisters who could talk of nothing but the beautiful girl at the ball.

With her Godmother's help, she attended the ball the next evening, and entranced the Prince even more. However, she left only at the final stroke of midnight, and lost one of her glass slippers on the steps of the palace. She retained its pair. The Prince chased her, but the guards had seen only a country wench leave. The Prince pocketed the slipper and vowed to find and marry the maiden to whom it belonged.

The Prince tried the slipper on all the maidens in the land. The Stepsisters tried in vain. Though the Stepsisters taunted her, Cinderella asked if she may try. Naturally, the slipper fit perfectly, and Cinderella put on the other slipper for good measure. The Stepsisters begged for forgiveness, and Cinderella forgave them for their cruelties.

Cinderella returned to the palace where she married the Prince, and the Stepsisters also married two lords.

Review: It's a beautiful tale. Why..any girl who doesnt grow up in a rich wealthy home would marvel over such a sweet fairytale. I love the bitter sweet part about the fairytale, whereby the prince lost her princess, leaving behind only one elegant pair of glass shoe. I think the most touching part is the prince decided to find the princess, searching for cinderella, house by house. The most magical moment when the feet slipped into the shoe, its so romantic neh~ haha.. of coz I know reality is otherwise. But who cares! Cinderella is the ultimate model! Love of everlasting quality, of wonderful sweetness, of true happiness. how wonderful! haha..

The Twelve dancing Princesses

Twelve beautiful princesses slept in twelve beds in the same room; every night their doors were securely locked, but in the morning their shoes were found to be worn through as if they had been dancing all night.

The king, perplexed, promised his kingdom and a daughter to any man who could discover the princesses' secret within three days and three nights, but those who failed within the set time limit would be put to death.

An old soldier returned from war came to the king's call after several princes had failed in the endeavour to discover the princesses' secret. Whilst traveling through a wood he came upon an old woman, who gave him an invisibility cloak and told him not to eat or drink anything given to him by one of the princesses who would come to him in the evening, and to pretend to be fast asleep after the princess left.

The soldier was well received at the palace just as the others had been and indeed, in the evening, the eldest princess came to his chamber and offered him a cup of wine. The soldier, remembering the old woman's advice, threw it away secretly and began to snore very loudly as if asleep.

The princesses, sure that the soldier was asleep, dressed themselves in fine clothes and escaped from their room by a trap door in the floor. The soldier, seeing this, donned his invisibility cloak and followed them down. He trod on the gown of the youngest princess, whose cry to her sisters that all was not right was rebuffed by the eldest. The passageway led them to three groves of trees; the first having leaves of silver, the second of gold, and the third of diamonds. The soldier, wishing for a token, broke off a branch from each grove; only the youngest princess heard the noises made, and voiced concerns that the eldest princess again ignored.

They walked on until they came upon a great lake. Twelve boats with twelve princes in them were waiting. Each princess went into one, and the soldier stepped into the same boat as the youngest. The young prince in the boat rowed slowly, unaware that the soldier was causing the boat to be heavy. The youngest princess complained that the prince was not rowing fast enough, not knowing the soldier was in the boat. On the other side of the lake was a castle, into which all the princesses went into and danced the night away.

The princesses danced until their shoes were worn through and they were obliged to leave. This strange adventure went on the second and third nights, and everything happened just as before, except that on the third night the soldier carried away a golden cup as a token of where he had been. When it came time for him to declare the princesses' secret, he went before the king with the three branches and the golden cup, and told the king all he had seen. The princesses saw there was no use to deny the truth, and confessed. The soldier chose the eldest princess as his bride for he was not a very young man, and was made the king's heir.

Review: I have this secret attraction to stories with secret entrance to another world. Harry potter I like that wall and the secret place in london where he bought his text books. Then the Chronicles of Narnia where the characters went into a different dimension, when they enter the closet. The Doraemon who has a wonderful door that leads u to any place you wana! haha..in this story, i like the secret place too, where the 12 princesses dance. It seems such an adventure, and as u read, u wonder if the guy would get discovered. And isnt it pretty? the leaves are gold n silver. pretty nice secret hideout in my opinion!

Thumbelina

Once, a woman grew a barleycorn in her garden, so beautiful that when she kissed the petals of the bloom, it burst into a flower and a tiny but beautiful girl emerged. The woman named her Thumbelina, as she was no bigger than the woman's thumb. (How the woman comes by the tiny girl is different in each adaption.

The girl's beauty soon attracted the attention of a frog. She believed Thumbelina would make a good bride for her son, so she kidnapped the girl in the middle of the night, and delivered her to her son. The son was immediately enchanted by Thumbelina's beauty, and left her on a lily pad. However, Thumbelina managed to find help. Fish gnawed away the root of the lily pad, and a butterfly offered to pull her to safety with one of Thumbelina's ribbons as a harness. Before she could be freed however, a beetle grabbed Thumbelina off the lily and took her away, leaving the butterfly to die as he was too fragile to break free of the ribbon.

The beetle, who was also enchanted by Thumbelina, brought her back to his family, but the female beetle declared she was ugly, and so they abandoned her as a result. Starving in the cold of winter, the little girl was then found by a field mouse, who took care of her. Because the mouse believed that she was indebted to him, the girl soon found herself engaged to a mole. The wedding would take place in spring, once the last snow thawed.

Unhappy that she must marry the mole, Thumbelina went to the see the flowers one last time, knowing the mole disliked the beauty of the upper world and would confine her to the ground below. A bird flew by and saw Thumbelina's distress, so he offered to take her away to a better world.

She agreed and the bird took her far away to a field of flowers, where he told her to choose a flower to claim as her own. Thumbelina found a flower, but discovered another person present, the prince of fairies. Enchanted by her beauty, he asked to marry her, and the little girl agreed. She was renamed Maia by the prince (as the name Thumbelina is not beautiful enough for a girl like her) and given a pair of wings so she may fly with her new husband.

Review: I like the picture of this storybook I owned. Thumbelina in a peanut shell. haha..isnt it cute! Coz of thumbelina, I liked the polly pocket that used to be really popular in my time. It provides a wonderful dimension for the mind to roam. It makes you imagine the underground insect houses, the flying actions..etc. Stories are meant to dream, to enjoy thoroughly, and stories like thumbelina lets u have the space for pure mind entertainment, which is why i enjoyed it loads! haha..

Yay..how do you like the stories? They think they are pretty cute. I would put in many other titles in my list: Little red ridinghood, goldilocks, the princess and the pea, the rabbit mother, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Sleeping beauty, the wild swans, the baby from the bamboo shoot, the red shoes, the 3 sisters, the clever girl, ugly duckling…etc! I think the most marvellous things you must value in fairytales, is that the writers have such beautiful imagination. Living in such a practical era, it would be wonderful if you can imagine much. ha.. Imagination is highly needed for fairytales. For a practical writer, he couldnt bring out the speciality of fairytales. Thats what make fairytale writers great writers. Who would have thought of such romantic stories? haha.. That’s all for now! Stay tune for next week’s Shuang fei bi jiao hong!! :)
