Sports for all students with new PE syllabus

ALL Singaporean youth will be able to play at least three sports at a recreational level by the time they leave secondary school.

That is one of the main objectives that the Ministry of Education (MOE) has set as part of its role in Vision 2030 - a project jointly led by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

Launched last July, it is a blueprint for the Republic's sporting future.

In line with this, a new physical education (PE) syllabus will be rolled out in phases, beginning in 2014. It will include a one-hour increase in PE each week. At present, primary school pupils attend between one and 11/2 hours of PE weekly, while secondary school students have one hour.

Ms Liew Wei Li, director of the MOE's student development curriculum division, said the ministry wants to get every child to lead a physically active lifestyle through participation in sports.

With that in mind, it will identify a set of core sports which every student will be well versed in by the time they leave secondary school.

Students will be taught progressively, starting with modified games at the primary level to full-fledged sports at the secondary and junior college/centralised institute level, a ministry spokesman explained.

He added that it is part of the MOE's view of sports as an 'important part of holistic education', which can inculcate the values of 'respect, teamwork, integrity, responsibility and resilience'.

'We're quite firm on seeing how we can develop character through our PE programme,' Ms Liew noted.

The MOE's initiative is part of just one of five preliminary recommendations that the Vision 2030 committee has come up with, designed to allow Singaporeans from all walks to life to get involved in sports.

Other initiatives under the same category - labelled Opportunities - include getting private corporations involved in the local sporting scene, as well as increasing the participation rate of the elderly.

Two other key areas - Access and Capabilities - contributed another six and eight recommendations respectively.

The Vision 2030 team announced all 19 recommendations at a media briefing yesterday, after seven months of consultation with close to 2,500 people, both face-to-face and online.

The next phase, according to committee members, is getting the public's views on the preliminary list, before implementing the finalised plans in May.

'The first step was a divergence of ideas,' noted MCYS Acting Minister Chan Chun Sing. 'For the second phase, we want to seek convergence and prioritise the ideas which are most useful to take us forward.'

But whether the initiatives are aimed at increasing participation (Opportunities), reaching out to the public (Access) or increasing the talent pool of athletes and officials (Capabilities), the ultimate goal of Vision 2030 is one of synergy.

'The first phase showed that there is a great diversity of (sporting) interests,' SSC chief executive Lim Teck Yin noted.

'Vision 2030 seeks to at least facilitate these.

'We want to provide opportunities and access for all segments of society to pursue sport in Singapore.'

Since primary school I don't really like to attend PE lessons. I find it a hassle to change into the PE attire, make our way to the school field or basketball court, then return to the classroom sweaty and smelly. Most students just wear their PE attire inside their uniforms and then take them off conveniently in the classroom when PE starts. However it's quite uncomfortable to wear double layer of clothes and it can be difficult to conceal the PE shorts completely under the normal shorts. It's simpler for girls since their skirts are longer haha.

Activity-wise I think primary school is the least stressful. We played around with cones and beanbags. Sometimes skipping ropes and hula hoops etc. At Primary 5 I got a fierce PE teacher and that was when I start to dread PE. Not to mention the NAPFA test which I always did badly at.

At secondary school my worst fears came true. PE became a weekly dreaded affair as we had to face a group of strict PE teachers who also double as discipline masters. Right from the first lesson we were drilled to pass NAPFA, especially 2.4km run which most people fail. Most lessons were spent on running and running. Those who fail to make the mark have to continue the running practice, while the rest get to play other stuff like soccer. There were just so much NAPFA-based trainings that I don't remember learning other sports.

In JC it became less dreadful. There was lesser emphasis on NAPFA training. I guess that's because most of us are already quite 'trained' in secondary school. One reason that kept me motivated to do well in NAPFA is avoiding BMT PTP haha. We had more chance to try other leisure sports activities, though most of my classmates weren't enthusiastic about PE lessons and often skipped them, especially at the end of a tiring day.

For a non-sporty person like me, PE lessons seem mostly physical drills and training. I hardly learnt any sports during these 12 years of compulsory PE.

Thinking about it now, I wished I had been more enthusiastic in PE. It isn't that dreadful actually...

The news of Taiwanese artiste, Makiyo assaulting a Taxi driver had been the talk of the town this week.
Xinmsn reports:
Taiwanese celebrity Makiyo recently made the headlines when it was reported her Japanese friend Takateru Tomoyori had assaulted a cab driver and she had done nothing to prevent the beating.
According to the Taiwanese media, a video of Makiyo and Takateru beating up the taxi driver had surfaced.
In the 50-second recording, Takateru was seen grabbing the taxi driver, whose surname is Lin, by his collar, before throwing him onto the ground and kicking him in the head.
Later, a woman wearing a white coat joined in the beating and stamped on Lin. During the attack, Takateru tried to stop the woman. He also asked two other female friends, who were standing by the roadside to flag for another cab.
However, the two women were too petrified to move.
The woman in the white coat then landed another kick on Lin. Takateru also kicked the man a few more times. Finally, the group left in another taxi.
From the video, it was evident that Lin was kicked at least 15 times.
The recording contradicted the three women's -- Makiyo, Taiwanese celebrities Yaz and Vanessa -- statements, which claimed that only Takateru was involved in the beating.
Police confirmed that Makiyo was the woman in white, after careful inspection of the footage. She now faces a possible 12-year jail term. Yaz and Vanessa could spend up to seven years in jail for abetting.
According to the taxi driver, who drove the four of them back to their hotel, "They were talking and laughing when they got into the cab, and were speaking in a mixture of Chinese and Japanese. I didn't hear them talk about beating anyone. They smelt of alcohol, but they spoke coherently and did not look abnormal. They didn't look like they had just beaten someone."
On Feb 8, Lin's lawyer handed over a beige cap worn by the taxi driver.
"Takateru and his friends had not told the truth. The footprints on this cap will tell us if they had kicked Lin's head," he said.
Furthermore, as Makiyo and Takateru spoke in Japanese that night, the victim's family strongly believed that the celebrity had instigated her friend to beat Lin up.
Reporters tried to contact Makiyo, but her phone was switched off. The celebrity's mother refused to respond to the matter, saying, "I'm tired."
On the other hand, Vanessa's manager explained, "It's inconvenient for us to comment, because the case is ongoing."
Yaz's manager could not be reached for comments either.

Are 萧亚轩 and 柯震东 dating?

Taiwanese signer Elva Hsiao and up-and-coming actor Kai Ko were spotted on a movie date last month. They later headed to a club and were said to have behaved intimately with each other.
Recently, the Taiwanese media reported that the 32-year-old Elva and Kai were spotted at Dazzling, a club owned by Elva's good friend Janet Yang. A number of their friends were also present that night.
According to reports, Elva and Kai behaved like lovers after a few rounds of drinks. The pair held hands and kissed passionately, ignoring the other patrons who were watching them.
When quizzed about the report, Elva, who is currently on vacation in Paris, said, "Dazzling is an open area. Do you think I can do that? Don't you think this piece of news is too exaggerated?"
The singer also insisted that she and 20-year-old Kai were "just friends", when asked if she had feelings for him.
Yesterday, Elva's manager explained that Elva had partied with 10 of her friends before she left for Paris.
On Feb 7, Kai was spotted at the same cinema, where he was spotted with Elva previously, but with a male friend this time.
When questioned about his kiss with Elva, Kai said, "No, we were just talking very closely."
It is believed that Elva and Kai met through the singer's friends Aimee Sun and Janet Yang. The pair has reportedly been dating for a month.
However, the couple has vehemently denied their relationship due to their 12-year age gap.

I like this concept.
BUT, i personally feel that as a first 主打 of this album, this strong is not strong enough.
Not really a fan of this song.
Furthermore, the dance choreography and the melody doesn't have the hook similar to that of 潇洒小姐, which made it such a success.

Next song, 终于让萧亚轩扳回一城.
Super love it.
She sang it with so much emotions and the song is beautifully written.
Music video is also filmed very nicely.
This is 逞强.

Up next is a happy, sweet and lovey dovey type of song.
Very suitable for time period cos next week would be Valentine day already.
This is 爱不离手.

Another dance track up next and i personally think this one is much better than 我爱我.
More international and classy feel to it as opposed to the quite cheesy 我爱我. Haha.
All the 天后s really need to choose their first 主打 properly sia.

I like the music video as well.
I think they closed the road so that Elva can dance in the middle of the it. Quite cool.

Strange sounds all over the world

Another creepy phenomenon that leads people to wonder if Doomsday is really approaching.

Some weeks ago, people from different parts of the world reported that strange noises could be heard from the atmosphere. The source of noise cannot be determined, but it was pretty loud and definitely not something natural. It can be heard even when there is no train stations nearby. The coincidence is that the strange sound was heard by people around the world at the same period of time.

If you are watching this on a quiet night, please don't creep out...

You can find many of such videos in youtube. A search in Google will give several related happenings, and this occurrence is 'serious' enough to have made it into mainstream news reports.

Where exactly does this weird noise come from? No one is able to explain that till now. Some say it's a hoax and these videos are fake. Whereas some argued that it is real as they have heard the noise personally, and there is no sign of the videos being doctored.

Some also noted the resemblance to 'War of the Worlds' movie, where loud mechanical sounds were heard before alien spaceships emerged from beneath the ground. Is this a sign of alien invasion? Some described that the Earth is groaning because of all the environmentally harmful acts that humans have done. And there is always a group of people who predicts that great disaster is befalling us.

《人生但求五十分/女性的世界？》

昨天刚看完了Silas Marner这本书。原本预定自己会用两个月的时间看完，但我用一个多月看完了，所以现在开始看另一本书。这本书并不在我的计划中，但这多出来的一个月让我有时间看一本比较轻松的书。毕竟一年的时间非常有限、宝贵，要好好珍惜每一分钟可以看书的机会。这一本叫做《法国女人不会老》。

在书中，作者提到了“人生但求五十分”的见解。她将这个哲理用在饮食和生活上，比如吃一根香蕉，她只吃半根香蕉，把另外半根留到明天当早餐。食用一半的分量，接着再食用一半的一半。这样会令我们在吃东西时，享受到食物的美味，而不是狼吞虎咽，食之无味。我把这个原理用在看书上。看一章的一半之后，我停了下来，过一会儿再继续看另外一半的一半。这个时间上的空隙让我感受到一种悠闲阅读的乐趣。那种乐趣和快乐来自于一种自在，不急躁的阅读速度，也让所读的资讯在心中逗留久一点，让思绪熟悉它的存在。

最近，我正在寻找一个女性楷模。因为发现自己总是崇拜男性（除了张爱玲之外），好像对女中豪杰一无所知。原以为男性和女性应该没什么不同，但确实还是有不同的。否则自然中为何会分出男和女？那么女性的特质是什么？优点和缺点是什么？以前没有思考过这个问题，现在想找出答案。当然我不同意女性和男性绝然不同，毕竟我相信（虽然许多人看不出来）我很男生。

S.H.E.'s Ella is getting married.
Xinmsn reports:
It looks like S.H.E member Hebe Tien would have to work harder at finding a boyfriend.
Yesterday, Hebe's band mate Ella Chen announced on her microblog that she would be marrying her Malaysian boyfriend Alvin Lai, becoming the second S.H.E member to tie the knot after Selina Jen. Selina married lawyer Richard Chang last October.
Ella and Alvin had been dating for more than a year.
The singer shared, "I'm finally getting married. I hope everyone would be able to meet their true love, cherish each other and love each other."
Alvin then replied to her post with, "I'll give you eternal happiness, I love you."
Ella also uploaded a photograph of herself with Alvin. In the photograph, the couple held hands in front of the Chinese words "good match", looking very much in love.
It is believed that the couple will wed on May 5. However, a wedding banquet will be held at Ella's hometown in Pingtung County in April.
According to Ella's friend, the singer had changed the date of her wedding more than 10 times, in order to accommodate her celebrity friends' schedules.
After she announced the good news, more than 50,000 fans shared the news.
Various celebrities also left well wishes for Ella online.
Selina commented, "Wow, wow, wow! Such beautiful news on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year! Ella, you're still my wife, even though you decided to marry another. I'll always love you."

仔仔和赵又廷真的闹翻了?

A drama which showed Vic's tremendous improvement in acting was the police and thief drama Black and White, in 2009. The drama even helped garner him a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Bell Awards the following year.
However, Vic lost to co-star Mark Chao in the awards, and it was rumoured that the actor then rejected the offer to star in the movie sequel of Black and White.
On the issue, Vic explained, "I feel that the character of Chen Zai Tian (Vic's character in the show) has already been pushed to the limit in the drama series and is hard to achieve another breakthrough. I don't want to use the same acting techniques and repeat things once again, so I chose to give up."
On the other hand, Vic said that he used to be close friends with Mark during the filming of the drama, but maintains that their friendship ended with the show.
"Mark and I were friends when we were filming Black and White. He is a very hard working actor and I hope that he will succeed. But after Black and White wrapped, I'm back to my lonesome self once again."

It started out with this small incident on the train:

And it has escalated to a verbal war between the two "countries".

Really buay tahan listening to the professor's nationalist comments. Even if he has experienced unpleasant encounters with Hongkongers, the name-calling and generalization of the entire population is pretty extreme. What's more, he expresses his prejudice in a matter-of-factly manner. Before he points his finger to others, perhaps he should reflect upon the behaviour of his own countrymen as well.

Anyway the professor was so engrossed in his verbal attack that he missed the point that the parent did not show any remorse for dirtying the train.

Quite a lot of countries allow eating or drinking in trains, though it is of good manners to do it discreetly without dirtying the area. These people might experience a little culture shock when they ride trains in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore, where eating or drinking is prohibited. Nevertheless it is important to respect the local culture and abide by their rules when visiting other countries.

With the influx of PRCs into Singapore, and the rising discontent with foreigners, will this kind of incident happen here as well in the future?

The professor cited examples from other countries to support his flawed logic. And that includes Singapore, which is also strictly governed by rules like Hong Kong. His '没素质' implication angered many Singaporeans too.

Following news reports that shed light on Taiwanese singer-actor Aaron Yan's deteriorating health, the 26-year-old recently took some time out of his busy schedule to go for a health check.
It is known that the singer suffers from basilar migraine, a hereditary condition, which tends to kick in times of stress, lack of sleep, and sudden changes in altitude or environment temperatures.
At the end of last year, Aaron was down with a terrible cold for more than half a month. However, he could not go for a medical checkup, because of his group's commercial performances and drama filming.
When he finally took time out from his busy schedule to go for a health check, at the hospital where his father works in, test results showed that Aaron had a fatty tumour (a harmless overgrowth of fat cells in a particular body area) growing in his chest. It is believed that he will find time to have it removed after the Lunar New Year.
The singer responded to the report, sharing that he has been very busy and recently experienced two asthma attacks. Once, an attack was so bad that he could not breathe and thought he was going to suffocate and die.
However, Aaron assured his fans that his condition is not as bad as it sounds, and hopes that they will not worry too much.

Local singer JJ Lin was promoting his latest album Lost N Found in Shanghai, China, when he responded to reports that he had a nip tuck.
Recently, an old video clip of him began circulating online, sparking speculations that he had gone under the knife.
"I really wish I could delete those old clips. Since we're on the topic of cosmetic surgery, I did a minor procedure on my teeth previously. If anyone can produce proof that I did work on other parts of myself, I'll admit to it."
At the promotional event, JJ also spoke on his love life.
The singer admitted that songs in his latest album reflected his thoughts on relationships.
"I'm someone who values relationship, especially when I'm certain she is the one. I'll protect and fight to for a beautiful memory, so that the relationship goes on. Perhaps because of that, I tend to rush into things and if I'm faced with difficulties, I have trouble overcoming them," he said.
JJ then revealed that he once had a failed relationship. At the time, he thought that he could balance his love life and career but "the more I try to protect the relationship, the more pressurised I was."
When the media questioned JJ about his recent declaration that he "had always liked S.H.E member Hebe" -- he replied shyly that their relationship did not develop further.
"Maybe we need to wait for an opportunity," he said.

It is Chinese New Year and so has introduce some high songs to you guys in order to get into the festive mood.
And since its so long since we had our previous K-pop special, i figure that this will be a suitable time to bring out some high and addictive Korean songs to get into the partying mood.

And in addition, since Servbot and I are studying Korean now, i sometimes pause the video awhile to try to read the lyrics.
Right now, we have learnt how to read Hanguel already.
But right now still cannot do it quickly. Must take some time to figure out then can pronounce the word.
Next step now is to memorize the vocab liao, wah i almost fainted when the teacher gave us a whole list of vocab to memorize. Stressed!!!

First up is IU with "You and I".
I think IU is really likeable cos when Reiko first got to knew her, she immediately became a fan of hers.
I still remember when we were in Servbot's house celebrating Xmas, Mango, Reiko and I were doing the hand gesture thingy. Haha.

Next up is this really sexy song called Troublemaker.
It is by this new group called Troublemaker which consist of 4 Minute's HyunA and Beast's HyunSeung.
It has a really catchy tone to it and the dance steps are really nice!!! 很会电人 lor those two.

Very popular in Korea also, was on the charts for quite a long time and most of the time its in the Top 3.
Let you guys listen to this live version where they sing a slow song before dancing to "Troublemaker".

Next up is T-ara's Lovey Dovey.
The current song that is sweeping the number 1 spot in all the music programs.
The shuffle dance they did for this song is so nice. And very 壮观 when they all do it together.

MBLAQ recently released their new song called "It's War".
Wah the lyrics very heavy sia.
Its about a guy whose girlfriend was snatched away from him by his best friend.
Hence he declared war with the best friend.
I love the choreography of this song.

I featured this on my facebook cos was really impressed with their performance.
Singing and dancing with the upmost energy for 11 minutes non stop.
Still singing in tune and no sign of any fatigue.

日本电视游戏节目恶搞本地的鱼尾狮，把代表新加坡的鱼尾狮丑化成口吐芥末（wasabi）的怪物，本地观众看了觉得气愤。

看过该集节目的网民“JellyLegs”在STOMP网站上指出，这是一种侮辱。

这位网民指出，新加坡的鱼尾狮闻名世界，尤其是在日本，在当地的广告和游戏节目中经常可以看见鱼尾狮出现。

最近，他听说鱼尾狮在受欢迎的日本搞笑综艺节目《Lincoln》中出现，但是，他看了节目后赫然发现，鱼尾狮在节目里成了可笑的怪物，令他觉得有被冒犯的感觉。

对此，其他网民也表示愤怒，指责该节目的制作单位太不敏感；但也有人指出，美国自由女神像也经常被拿来开玩笑，不必为此耿耿于怀。

I felt amused when I saw the merlion in the game show. And I don't see a reason to get offended by this, since even Sgeans use 'merlion' to mean 'vomit' sometimes. In fact I think the idea is pretty creative. It beats just putting a flowing pipe at the top of the stairs, as it would be so boring.

Anyway if you look at the pictures (or video), the merlion is spitting some colourless liquid. How did the Stomper come to the conclusion that it is wasabi?! It is most probably just hot water, deduced from the video which shows someone get scalded.

What people around the world know about this little red dot is probably just our merlion. Look at tourism advertisements on SG and there is always a merlion somewhere, although MBS is gradually gaining recognition. At least our national icon is unique enough to create an impression among foreigners. Just treat this as free publicity for SG haha.

According to a recent Hong Kong magazine report, Andy accompanied his wife for a checkup last week and requested the doctor to use the 4D structural ultrasound, which shows clear, real-time images, to determine the gender of the baby.
During the checkup, the singer asked impatiently, "Is it a boy or a girl? Will the baby have a hooked nose like me?"
When the doctor said, "If I'm not mistaken, it's a boy," Andy was so happy that he broke into bouts of hearty laughter.
It is said that Carol will deliver her baby in Hong Kong and to keep his schedule free, Andy reportedly rejected a number of film offers, making a loss of KH$380 million (S$3.08 million).
The singer will be able to spend more time with his wife after February, when he completes the two movies he has on hand.
Andy was also rumoured to have hired Hong Kong's famous gynaecologist He Yong Chao, to help deliver the child.
When asked to clarify the report, the doctor smiled and said, "It's inconvenient for me to comment."
When contacted, Andy's spokesperson in Taiwan expressed, "We do not comment on our artiste's personal life. Thank you for your concern."
The 50-year-old singer and his wife tried various methods, before Carol successfully conceived a baby boy. Hence, the couple has been extra careful in terms of taking preventing measures to protect both mother and child.
Andy not only hired bodyguards, he also engaged two personal nurses to take care of Carol; Andy's mother will also make tonics for her daughter-in-law.

When local singer JJ Lin released his latest album Lost N found, it was vaguely revealed that his record label forbade the singer from pursuing matters of the heart.
However, at the party celebrating his album's good sales performance, JJ openly expressed, "I hope I can be No. 1 in whatever I do, and I hope someone can introduce me a No. 1 girlfriend too."
The singer specially mentioned S.H.E. member Hebe Tien, saying that he wanted to invite her as a guest singer for his upcoming concert.
He added, "She is my type, but I may not be the type of guy she likes."
Looking slightly embarrassed, JJ revealed that his record label tried to invite Hebe once. However, the pair missed out on the chance to work together, due to scheduling conflicts.
JJ also expressed his hopes to do a duet with her in the future and added, "I really admire her, but I'm worried that I won't be able to sing when I see her."
Commenting on Hebe's recent declaration that she "wants to date", JJ laughingly requested for good friend Ella Chen to help him out.
"Please put in some good words for me in front of Hebe," he said.

It has been awhile since this singer has released any new songs.

Poll: Orchard is world's top shopping strip

Orchard Road has beaten 29 other premier shopping strips to become the world's best shopping street in a survey by a French marketing consultancy.

Ninety mystery shoppers, sent out to 400 retail outlets in 30 cities by Paris-based Presence Mystery Shopping, rated Orchard Road highly in all the judging categories.

Orchard Road scored a total of 89 points out of 100.

The four categories were: the cleanliness of the street and the retail outlets, the quality of the retail staff and the friendliness of passers-by.

The mystery shoppers who came here said Orchard Road stood out for its "wide and clean pavements and diversity of shops", and noted the availability of bins and benches.

They also felt welcomed by the sales staff in the shops.

Orchard Road was one of only two shopping strips in Asia in the top 10. Tokyo's Ginza was ranked ninth.

When The Straits Times took the news of Orchard Road's pole position to the shopping strip itself yesterday for a street poll, two opposing views emerged.

In one corner were tourists, who gave Orchard Road the thumbs-up, praising it for its cleanliness and the standard of service they had received.

In the other were Singaporeans, many of whom said the variety of shops was disappointing, and that they had received better customer service in cities such as Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

Housewife Tricia Chong, 31, could not believe Orchard Road had come out tops.

She said: "The service staff in Hong Kong are more motivated. They even learn languages like English and Chinese to converse with their international customers."

Hairstylist Winnie Goh, 30, said Orchard Road could do with more brands, especially mid-range ones.

She added that she has shopped in H&M in Tokyo, and that it took a couple of years for the label to come here.

The sentiments of tourists were in sync with those of the mystery shoppers.

Mr Thierry Moret, the 52-year-old Swiss chief operating officer of luxury watch brand Chopard, who is here on business, said: "The service quality here is excellent.

"Basically, in Asia, service is always better than in Europe. People are more friendly and smile more."

Ms Claire Sutherland, 40, who has been to the Champs-Elysees in Paris, London's shopping districts and New York's Madison Avenue, was all praise for Orchard Road.

"Ion Orchard is the most beautiful shopping centre I've been in... Orchard Road is top in the world, with top stores that are easy to get to in a big, wide street," said the Australian journalist.

Retail analysts said the survey findings reflected the effort and investment made to transform Orchard Road into a world-class shopping street.

They noted that in a 2008 makeover costing S$40 million (US$31 million), Orchard Road was spruced up, with wider pavements, benches, lamp posts and even recycling bins.

Paid for by the Singapore Tourism Board, the improvements were aimed at elevating Orchard Road to the level of famous shopping streets like the Champs-Elysees.

Ms Letty Lee, the director of retail services at real estate consultancy CBRE, said: "It was a conscious effort to raise Singapore to the top.

"Now, in terms of appearance, Orchard Road is really on top."

Singapore Polytechnic Business School senior retail lecturer Sarah Lim also agreed with the mystery shoppers.

She said: "It's a very pleasant walk down Orchard Road, and with major brands on the facades of the malls, it looks impressive."

She added: "The strong results in service also showed that our investment in customer service training is showing results."

However Orchard Road seems to always hit the news with all its problems. Every now and then there are articles or letters complaining about the situation in Orchard. Let's see what I can think of:

Flooding (aka ponding): Ever since the 'big flood' in 2010, Orchard Road has undergone major and minor floods every now and then. It's always that same few low-lying shopping malls. The news never fail to make a big hoo-ha each time, as citizens point the finger to PUB, the government, PAP, ministers, and everything they can criticize.

Congestion: As the shopping street is getting more and more crowded, narrow routes such as the Orchard MRT underpass and the Wisma-Taka corridor often experience human jam, especially during holidays and festive seasons. People even fainted in the congestion before.

Sewer Leakage: At the Orchard MRT underpass near Tangs side. The stench can fill up the entire passageway and what's more it's underground and the ventilation is not that good.

Power Outage: A recent case in Ion Orchard. Seems like the infrastructure in Orchard is so prone to breakdowns. Too much usage?

Bird Nuisance: A daily occurrence around 7pm around the Somerset stretch, when the birds are having a great evening meeting. Not only do shoppers have to bear with the loud chirping noises, they have to also beware of 'dropping bombs'.

Traffic Jam: During peak occasions or when accidents happen. At least the problem here is not as serious as CTE.

Are Singaporeans too whiny or foreigners fail to notice the downside of Orchard Road? Service-wise I can't really tell because I rarely shop and the service Sgeans get may be different from what foreigners get.

2011/2012 Semester 2

I just had my first lesson for the semester today and I was suddenly remembered that I forgot to write this entry. Haha.

Here are the modules that I will be taking this semester.
Last semester before I join the workforce and contribute to the GDP of Singapore. Haha.

FIN4112G: Seminar in Finance: Private Equity
HY2220: Korea in the Twentieth Century
LAK1201: Korean 1
GEK1003: Introduction to Politics
BCP4002: Consulting Practicum

Of cos this semester i will have to continue with my Consulting Practicum project. This semester the focus is to get the report out. Gonna be lotsa writing and analysis cos previous groups doing our project had submitted reports with 300 pages. So must at least be on par. Wah 300 page lor can die sia. Machiam writing a book.

And if u notice, this sem is also very Korean for me. Will be taking Korean history and Korean Language. This is my first time taking a third language course in NUS. I pray that i can survive. Just learning the vowels online, i already wanna faint. Haha.

This semester, i will be going all out in my job hunting as well.
Really wish that i can secure a reasonable job before graduation.

Praying that the Lord open up doors for me in my job hunt and guide me in choosing the right career path.
May He lead us through all the obstacles and challenges ahead!!!

Last November, Hong Kong 'Heavenly King' Andy Lau received numerous well-wishes and blessings from fans and the public alike, after he announced on his blog that "there is a happy occasion in my family".
Yesterday, the actor was in high spirits when he promoted his upcoming movie A Simple Life at Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, with co-star Deanie Ip.
Andy, who's usually tight-lipped about his personal life, clarified that the online rumours, which claimed his wife Carol Chu was three months pregnant, "was wrong, she's actually four months pregnant".
Reporters quizzed the actor on the baby's gender, who said he had no preference for boy or girl.
When probed if Carol had morning sickness and if they have named the baby, Andy smiled and thanked the reporters, refusing to answer further.
Deanie, with whom he shares a mother-son-like relationship, spoke up for the actor, saying, "Don't talk about the things at home. Don't talk about happy things too."
Reporters then asked if Andy would stop work to keep his wife company.
"I've to finish two movies I have on hand first. I'll be heading to China to film Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains after the New Year. After which, I'll film another movie with director Johnnie To in Hong Kong, scheduled to be released in March," the actor said, suggesting that he would be spending most of his time in Hong Kong after February.

郭富城 fell from a 3m platform when performing on stage.

Hong Kong singer Aaron Kwok's De Showy Masquerade World Tour ended its run two nights ago.
The singer fell from a three-metre high platform that night, when the wire of the makeshift platform snapped suddenly. He was then performing his hit song 'The Man with an Iron Face'.
Being the professional he is; Aaron did not stop the concert after the accident. Instead, he continued with his performance after a costume change.
When asked if he sustained any injuries, Aaron said, "I know everyone's worried [about me], but I'm fine."
However, an insider let on that the singer had torn his muscles slightly.
At the post-concert celebration party, Aaron also revealed that the performance called for six other dancers to be on the platform with him initially, adding that should an accident occur then, it would have been disastrous.
Reporters then probed if rumoured girlfriend Lynn Hung comforted him backstage, to which the singer laughed and said, "I won't talk about this."
On the day of his countdown concert, Aaron had walked up to Lynn and shook her hand. When asked if there was any special significance behind his action, he said, "It's normal to shake hands with friends."
The singer also evaded the marriage question, expressing, "I'm very busy right now. I'll inform everyone when the time comes."

Today we will be featuring our very own local born star, 蔡健雅.
Let's take a peek at the songs from her newly released album 《说到爱》.

First up is 说到爱.
The scenes from the music video might be very familiar to Reiko as the starting scene is set in a French language classroom.
I must say this is a really warm song filled with love.
Let's "sing it out of love" with Tanya ba.

I personally think this song quite cute. Haha.
If you have been reading Servbot's own blog, you would be familiar with this song.
This song is called 别找我麻烦.
It was inspired when Tanya was having a really unlucky day.
She wanted to go out and it started to rain that kinda thing.
And hence the birth of the song.

Next up this song abit more 感伤.
The song title is called 旧行李.
About someone who still loves her old lover even though they cannot be together anymore.

We all know 蔡健雅 is a very talented musician and she usually compose all her songs.
But this time round did you notice that she writes most of the lyrics as well?
Wah from an ang moh pai person so someone who is able to use the Chinese language so fluently to the point of writing song lyrics in Chinese. Reiko can use her as a role model to motivate students to learn Chinese. Haha.
Next up is "Letting Go". Another song in which she composes and write the lyrics.

Last song of the day is this song called 可爱.
Although the song title is 可爱, the lyrics a little tinge of attitude and it is about being single.
So wonder if it strikes the chord with all the singles out there.

How Much to Vomit in a Taxi in Singapore?

On New Year's Eve, taxi driver Tan Pin Lin started his shift at 5 p.m. with 10 plastic bags, boxes of tissue paper and a prayer that no one would puke in his cab after a night of partying.

As he wrapped up his shift at 5 a.m. yesterday, he counted himself fortunate: Only one passenger had vomited.

He said in Mandarin: "I think I'm very lucky that the vomiting one was my last fare. If not, I would have had to take time out to clean the taxi, lose earnings and then try to find passengers who don't mind the smell."

Taxi drivers regularly have to deal with drunken passengers who refuse to compensate them for the cost of cleaning up after making a mess in the vehicles.

Although some embarrassed passengers do pay up, cabbies say others are too drunk to do so, or simply refuse to pay the 20 Singapore dollars (US$15.4) to get the taxi cleaned.

Besides being set back 20 Singapore dollars every time it happens, the cabbies also stand to lose the 30 to 50 Singapore dollars they would have earned had they been out driving instead of being stuck in a petrol station washing bay.

The cost of picking up a drunken passenger who pukes is thus at least 50 Singapore dollars.

The number of passengers who have had too much to drink doubles during the December to February festive season, a Straits Times poll of 50 cabbies found.

Eric Low, 41, who drives the 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. shift seven days a week, said he picks up perhaps three vomiting passengers in a normal month, and up to four a week during the Christmas and New Year period.

Cabbies say that as more nightspots open, the number of "hurling" passengers can only go up.

They say that when they have a passenger who has thrown up on board, the standard practice is to ask for a flat payment of 10 to 20 Singapore dollars - on top of the fare - depending on how bad the mess is.

Faisal Nordin, 47, said: "If they throw up mostly in a plastic bag and just some gets on the mat, I ask for 10 Singapore dollars and take an hour off to clean up my taxi at the nearest coffee shop.

"But sometimes, the whole seat is covered with vomit and it's so disgusting that even after two hours of cleaning, the smell is so strong no one will take my cab."

If this happens, especially early in a shift, cabbies stand to lose up to 300 Singapore dollars for the rest of the night.

They are not protected by any regulation that entitles them to compensation from their passengers.

Hong Chin Chye, 60, who has been a cabby for more than 20 years, said: "I ask nicely a few times, but if they say no, I can't do anything. The most I can do is to ask for their particulars and write a letter to them the next day."

The legal route is to file a claim against the passenger at the small claims court. If violence or assault is involved, cabbies can go to the police.

The Straits Times understands that the Land Transport Authority regulates taxis' operating standards but leaves such issues for cab companies to sort out.

ComfortDelGro, Singapore's biggest cab operator with a fleet of about 15,000 taxis, said it does not have a policy on compensation, but it does offer its cabbies free cleanups at its workshops.

However, the cabbies said they would rather head to the nearest petrol kiosk for a cleanup than to drive to a workshop.

ComfortDelGro's spokesman said there were 50 such cases reported last year.

Prime Taxi general manager Eric Ang said the company would write up to three letters to the passenger requesting compensation, but it cannot do much else unless the cabby decides to sue the passenger.

Of the 50 cabbies surveyed, 45 were in favour of a "vomit surcharge."

R. Saravanan, 40, said: 'These passengers put us in a difficult position. If we pick them up, we get a mess. If we don't, they take down our license plate numbers and report us for avoiding them.

"If there's a surcharge, they may be more careful and puke into a bag instead."

Marketing manager Claris Ang, 34, threw up in a cab on New Year's Eve after a night of drinking at Clarke Quay.

She apologized and paid the cabby 20 Singapore dollars to get his taxi cleaned.

She said yesterday: "I felt very bad seeing the taxi uncle's face fall after I threw up. The smell was so bad he nearly vomited himself, so the least I could do was to pay up, since he'd probably have trouble getting passengers after me."

If you drink, don't drive.

So drunkards take the cab instead. And then they puke and make a mess of the taxi, causing income loss, discomfort and great inconvenience to the drivers.

If the passenger doesn't compensate, there is nothing the cabbie can do, except to 'suck thumb'. Most of the time the drunkards aren't in the right state of mind to apologize or compensate.

Implementing 'vomit surcharge' may be a good idea. But how do you enforce it?

Sue/Report the passenger? Nah, too much hassle. The same reason why taxi drivers often don't pursue the matter when passenger escapes without paying.

Some cabbies might choose to avoid taking up drunken passengers, leaving them to sleep on the streets, and then receive complaints for the unsightly behaviour, or for 'spoiling the image of SG' as some would claim.

People drink, creating troubles for themselves and surrounding people when they get drunk.

Like smoking and gambling, such bad habits are still widespread despite the ability to cause serious health and social problems. Moreover the innocents are often involved too.

I just don't understand.

2012 New Year Resolutions

Hey all,
This is my first entry of 2012 and i figure that it is time to make some New Year Resolutions.
Setting some targets and goals for myself!!!!!
Alright so here goes:

1) Maintain cap at around 3.7 and graduate with Second Lower.

2) Maintain close relationship with God.

3) Maintain close relationship with close friends.

4) Find a reasonably reputable and well-paid full time permanent job that is fulfilling.

5) Finish reading Superfreakonomics and another book of my choice.

6) Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet to shed the tummy.

7) Start planning and building up my personal finances (Insurance, Investments and Savings)

8) Building up my confidence level.

9) Having a passionate and enthusiastic mindset in whatever I do.

10) Sharpen my driving skills.

The final two are more of personal wishes and desires for the new year rather than resolutions.

11) Going for a wonderful Graduation Trip.

12) The secret wish continues this year!!!! :) Hope will be realized soon.

Following Quan Yi Fong's dispute with taxi driver Chan Swee Kong on Jun 26, 2010, she was charged in court, facing one count of criminal force against the taxi driver and two counts of mischief.
When the case was heard in court last month, Yi Fong through her counsel announced her decision to enter a guilty plea, and sought a probationary sentence, citing long-term depression and mental health problems as her reasons.
The presiding judge then called for a probation report of which the sentence was passed yesterday.
In the company of her grand aunt, Chen Mingli, MediaCorp manager and lawyer Mr Subhas Anandan, Yi Fong appeared in court yesterday morning.
Dressed in an all black ensemble, she appeared calm and even smiled on several occasions throughout the proceedings.
The TV personality was noticeably more relaxed after the 15 months probation sentence was passed.
Presiding District judge, Low Wee Ping, said to Yi Fong during sentencing, "placing you on probation does not mean that the court is condoning your actions, it is because you have strong mitigating factors, particularly your medical history. Your background does not justify your offence."
The conditions of her probationary period restrict the host from leaving Singapore without prior approval from her probationary officer.
She will also have to report to the relevant authorities within 24 hours upon her return to the country.
In addition, Yi Fong will have to undergo psychological treatments and counseling to better manage her emotions. Grand Aunt Chen Mingli will have to post a bond of S$3,000 as her guarantor.

林俊杰's latest album is inspired from break up with his girlfriend?

Local singer JJ Lin, who is seldom caught in rumours, was reportedly dating Taiwanese model Lilian Chen recently.
Speaking at a promotional event of his latest album Lost N Found in Beijing yesterday, the singer let slipped that he had already split from Lilian.
Telling reporters that the new record was a product of an emotional low-point in his life, JJ went on to reveal that it was those depressing feelings that inspired him to compose three love songs for his album.
And if composing music was not enough to get over his heartache, the singer even sold his little less than a-year-old convertible.
"I believe that bidding farewell to the sad past brings a happy beginning. It took me awhile before I made the determined decision to sell the car that I'd previously bought," JJ said.
JJ's car was reportedly worth NT$13 million (S$560,000) and is said to be a mode of transportation for the singer and ex-lover Lilian.
When asked if selling the car was an indication of a break-up, JJ replied, "I should first learn to understand myself before entering a relationship."
On his expectation of love, the singer expressed that he hoped to meet a partner who would "show me new perspectives".
However, JJ seemed resolved to let love take a back seat for now.
"I guess it will take some time before I finally meet the right person," he said.

Last week, we have taken a look at Jupiter Awards' Best Group winner.
Today we will take a peek at the winner for Best Male Singer, 陈奕迅.
This singer has managed to secure the Best Male Singer Award for the third time despite strong competition from younger 新生代 singers.
The name of the album is also very intriguing, it is just a "?". What does it mean?
Let's take a look.

Are you like that as well?
Will hide some of yourself when you meet someone?
Most importantly, will you be able to 看穿 who is sincere and who is being hypocritical?
This is 看穿.

Basically, i think this album is a little heavy and could be quite emo.
This next song is also like that.
Next up is 内疚.
I think only someone like 陈奕迅 can sing this kinda song.
I can't imagine such songs ending up in another person's hand. It would sound like a big disaster.
Need a lot of emotions to sing and those emotions are quite 细腻 kind.

What kind of a father is 陈奕迅?
Well, you might be able to catch a fatherly glimpse of him in this next song.
This is "Baby Song".
A song dedicated to his daughter.

Next up is a little bit of indie genre kinda song.
In terms of melody, I think this is probably the most light hearted song in the album. Haha.
This is 积木. Enjoy.

I love love love love this last song.
Although don't have MV i still must recommend to you guys.
This song called 孤独患者 is written by 小寒 and 方大同.
And i must say it is beautifully written.
When someone is very outgoing and look very cheerful, it doesn't mean that their hearts aren't lonely.
As the lyrics goes "外向的孤独患者, 有何不可".

2011 Resolutions Review (Xian Hao)

Hi all,
As 2011 is coming to a close, I think it is time for me to do some reflections and see whether i hit the target i set for myself at the beginning of the year.

So here goes my 2011 resolutions review.

1) Improve CAP score to at least 3.7.

I did it!!! Very happy. Must continue to fight in the new year. Last sem alr.

2) Maintain close relationship with God!!!!

I think i did have a closer relationship with God this year as compared to last year. But of cos it can be improved.

3) Maintain close relationships with my wonderful cliques of friends (Zhui Xing, Uni, Ter lil chris, 5sis3)

Ups and Downs as usual. Conflicts and drifting apart issues do occur. But im glad that they are all resolved. Fantastic Trip to Bali with ZX too.

4) Build up more self confidence in myself!!!!! I seriously lacking in this area sometimes and hate myself for that. This year must improve.

Regarding this, i think still abit fail. Will doubt myself and my abilities at times. Haiz. Need to have more self confidence. Definitely lotsa room for improvements for this one.

5) Finish reading the book that i got for my Birthday last year and another book of my interest (be it finance, sociology or economics).

Yup. I did that. :) Read 2 books. A Gift to my Children by Jim Rogers and The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Currently in the midst of reading Superfreakonomics by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner.

6) Hopefully have a chance to know more friends and join new clique. :)

I wouldn't say i had joined a new clique but im grateful that i had a chance to meet new people and we became close friends. :)

7) Get an Internship during the summer vacation.

Thank God for the opportunity to work in Coca Cola during the summer. :)

8) Shed 2 to 3 kg and flatten tummy. (Vigorous exercise coming up liao. Haha.)

I did exercise more this year. I might have lost some weight but the tummy is going no where. Lol.

9) Maintain passion in studies and whatever i do. Passion brings people further and stretches our potential. Very important.
Rather than having more passion in studies. I regret to say that my passion is slowly dying. Haiz. Not sure if it is a symptom that all final year students will face.

10) Bank Balance is drying up. Must bring up the numbers!!!!!

Thanks to internship pay and government progress package, i managed to maintain the numbers. Didn't bring up though.

11) Similar to last year, i will have a secret wish to myself.
Its the same wish as last year cos last year didn't come true so making the same wish again.
Hopefully can finally come true!!!
I wouldn't say the secret wish had came true but things are looking good. I hope. Haha.

Reflections:
All in all, I would say that i had accomplished much of what i had set out to do.
Very thankful and grateful to God for all the opportunities that I have been given.
I received a lot of help from a lot of 贵人 as well. Thanks to them, the task to complete these resolutions becomes a little bit easier.
Lastly, I think i would need to work more on self improvement next year. I noticed that the resolutions not accomplished this year are all very personalized. Self confidence and passion, two things that i feel are very important in order to succeed and are qualities that i am lacking now. Yup.

Hope you guys had a really great year too.
And may 2012 be all the more awesome. Yay!!!!

吴克羣's discovered a tumor next to his liver.
Xinmsn reports:
Taiwanese singer Kenji Wu who had just completed his concert tour, received a health scare recently.
Kenji, who was not feeling well had gone for a health screening and discovered a small shadow in his liver.
After the news circulated, the singer received calls from concerned family and friends. His mother, who was so worried on hearing the news, broke down in tears. Kenji immediately consoled her, saying, "It's all right."
Kenji returned to the hospital for another check-up. After doing an ultrasound scan, a 6-cm tumour was discovered on the right side of his liver.
While the doctors assured Kenji that the tumour would not affect his health, he suggested that the singer go for a MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan to determine the structure of the tumour, before deciding how to treat it.
Kenji admitted that "it sounded really terrifying," when he first heard the news. Later, he remained calm and told himself, "Relax, life and death is fated."

周杰伦 surprises audiences at his concert with 谢霆锋's appearance.

Taiwanese singer Jay Chou's The Era World Tour came to a close on Dec 18, at the Kaohsiung Arena in Taiwan.
Known for surprising his audience, Jay had invited former flame Jolin Tsai to perform with him in Taipei last year. This year, the singer shocked his fans again, when Hong Kong singer-actor Nicholas Tse made a guest appearance at his concert.
Jay and Nicholas first met when they acted in movie The Viral Factor. However, Nicholas was going through a divorce with his ex-wife Cecilia then, resulting in him being the focus of media attention and stealing the limelight from Jay.
Nicholas reportedly made Jay unhappy when he did not join in the promotions of the movie because he had few scenes in the film
Nicholas' appearance at Jay's concert last Sunday clearly suggested all was well between the two.
During the opening of the concert, a LED ball opened up slowly and Nicholas -- decked in leather jacket and a pair of sunglasses -- appeared on stage with a guitar, performing the song 'Exclamation Mark'.
Fans initially thought they had seen the wrong person, only to go wild when Jay appeared with a keyboard, sharing a duet with Nicholas.
Nearing the end of the concert, the crowd was treated to more surprises as Jay sang Nicholas' popular song 'Old Wound'. Nicholas then appeared on stage, performing Jay's song 'Silence'.
"Thank you to Nicholas for supporting me," Jay said.
Nicholas replied, "It's been seven and a half years since I came to Kaohsiung. I also stopped playing the guitar after I broke my finger five to six years ago. It's all for you this time."

蔡依林 to star in a movie soon??
Xinmsn reports:
Taiwanese pop princess Jolin Tsai had won rave reviews for her breathtaking moves such as the ribbon dance and the high-level pommel horse stance during solo concerts.

The singer's ability has reportedly caught the attention of a production house in China who is keen to rope her in to portray the role of an action heroine for a movie.

The movie, which is still being scripted, will also star acclaimed Chinese actor Liu Ye.

While Jolin's manager denied the news about the Chinese movie, she confirmed that the singer has been receiving offers to star in movies.

Jolin's management is said to be reviewing scripts and looking for a suitable one and chances are high that the singer might just be heading to the silver screen in time to come.

The singer's previous acting projects include Taiwanese drama Hi! Working Girl in 2003, where she acted alongside Show Luo, and a short-film music video for her album in 2007.

Fans of 黄靖伦 will be get to see more of him in 2012 when he stars in a new local drama with 欧萱.

Fans of the boyish actor-singer Hung Jing Lun can look forward to seeing him on local TV next year.

Jing Lun who was last seen in the xinmsn and ChU idol web drama Let's Play Love in April, recently returned to Singapore for an imaging session for Ch U's upcoming youth idol drama Jump.

Jump tells the story of Xiao Chun Li (played by Jeanette Aw), a Chinese language teacher who leads a group of students -- thought to be 'hopeless' -- from the school's jump rope team, pit their skills in competitions, and set out to prove their worth.

Jing Lun plays Zhang Guo Lun, a Chinese major graduate, who becomes a trainee teacher at Lan Tian School, after he loses interest in his 9-to-5 job.

Guo Lun loves to use proverbs in his daily conversations, and would correct people when he hears them use the wrong ones.

This is similar to Jing Lun, whose love for using proverbs has become his trademark. The singer received the nickname 'Teacher Lun' when he competed in Taiwan's singing competition One Million Star 3, because of his constant use of proverbs.

While he loves to use proverbs, Jing Lun shared that he was still worried about being able to remember his script.

Not only is Jing Lun busy with Jump, he's also hosting a travelogue Super Taste in Taiwan. With such a busy schedule, we wondered if the 28-year-old has time for love.

"You already said I'm busy, where do I find time for love? I'm leaving it to fate," he lamented.

That said, the singer does have plans for his love life. For example, he hopes to find a girlfriend by the time he turns 30 and to settle down before he is 35.

"My parents worry if I'm gay because I've been single for so long. Don't worry, I'm trying my best to find someone," Jing Lun joked.

Jing Lun also shared that he likes reasonable girls, who know how to manage finances and are filial, not only to her own parents, but to his as well.

The cutesy cutesy part of 周杰伦 emerges in this song.
A lot of people say it is similar to 牛仔很忙. Wonder what u guys think.
I personally like this song a lot.
Quite humorous and light hearted.
A song that will brighten up your day.
难得 someone of his 天王 status will still sing this type of cutesy songs.

I totally ruined this next song with my 瞎掰 version when i was in Bali to the point where Servbot said that he will keep thinking of my version when he listens to this song. Haha.

Looks like many K-pop fans were offended by this article, which spoke up so vehemently against the Korean wave and its entertainment scene.

Sick of K-pop cult

In David Mitchell's 2004 novel Cloud Atlas, there is a futuristic segment set in Korea where a corpocracy rules the land. Advances in bioengineering have allowed human creatures called fabricants to be bred as workers. Physically, they are perfect specimens - with identical, beautiful faces but without any higher consciousness. When they run out the course of their productive lives, they are destroyed.

I found this section of the book particularly disturbing. It is a chilling study of how a capitalist totalitarian society exploits the weak and turns humans into robots for money. Everything looks happy on the surface but beneath, it's maggots and rotten meat.

Recently, I got a taste of Mitchell's dystopian view - at a K-pop fan meet of superband TVXQ.

What's a fan meet? It is a shrunken version of a concert, with only a handful of live performances. Interspersed with the song-and-dance numbers are screenings of music videos and sanitised Q&A sessions.

To any disinterested observer, it was a blatant rip-off. To the fans, it was like communing with the gods. It was a uniquely depressing experience but during the show, I could not put my finger on the reason.

Could it have been the dead-eyed way the pop princes answered questions from stuttering fans about their favourite Singaporean food? Or the well-choreographed dance moves they executed, without a glitch, to songs scientifically engineered to stick onto your brain like a leech?

Then, it dawned on me. They are fabricants. Singing, dancing fabricants.

But I am being unfair on TVXQ. They are not the only K-pop group to have infiltrated the consciousness and fantasies of teenagers in Asia and beyond.

A lot has been made about the Hallyu Wave, the unstoppable South Korean pop culture tsunami that has washed up on the shores of the world, conquering music charts, television ratings and the wall space of adolescents' rooms.

I am heartily sick of it. Every bit of it. The manufactured sounds, the ersatz emotions, the clone-like stars, the cult- like, weepy fandom.

My more moderate friends point out that teen idols from the East and the West were never the vanguard of musical experimentation. Neither did they inspire devotion from level-headed people.

Before your Super Juniors or 2AMs, there were cheesy boybands such as Backstreet Boys in the noughties and The Partridge Family from the 1970s.

But of all the decades of cashing in on teenagers' hormonal urges, the K-pop phenomenon seems the most coldly cynical and formulaic. Compared to the uniformity of the Korean stars, Backstreet Boys seem like veritable bastions of individuality.

Part of the reason is because the Korean record labels have gotten their star-making formula down to a T.

This seems to be the drill: Train some nice-looking kids in a star factory. Assemble a group of them. Give them a name that is an abbreviation for something or just a random collection of letters and numbers.

The girls must have stick-thin arms and legs and the boys must look a bit like girls. Next, produce a song that is the demon child of Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas. Throw in Autotune, hip-hop beats and strong synth lines. Make a video that is a mini movie, featuring the stars doing synchronised dance moves while the back-up dancers gurn at the sides.

Voila! You have a viral hit.

For the record, I have nothing against pre-packaged happy, shiny music. In fact, I think there is something heroic and wonderful about the wilfully plasticky and fake.

But my quarrel with K-pop is not only with the aesthetic aridity of its products but with how nasty it can get. For one thing, the Mafia-like way the record companies exploit their stars and audience is chilling.

The industry has long been stalked by controversy around "slave" contracts that tie trainee stars to long exclusive deals with poor pay and little control.

Incidentally, three of TVXQ's five members took their record label to court because their 13-year contract was too long, restrictive and gave them little profit. The boys won and left to form their own group, JYJ.

Admittedly, it is hard to feel sorry for pop stars ("It's sad to hear that being adored by millions prevents you from taking public transport"), but in my rare maternal moments, I worry about these starlets who are worked to the bone and whose careers last as long as their good looks. Then they are discarded like rag dolls.

Then there is K-pop's effects on listeners. It turns functional people into crazed addicts, acting in robotic idolatry.

Recently, watching a sea of red lightsticks keeping beat to a song made me and my companion grab on to each other. Eyes wide in terror, we communicated wordlessly for fear of persecution. Our faces said this: "Are we at a cult gathering?"

K-pop is also unique in inspiring extreme behaviour from fans and generating psychosis. Cyber-bullying and online smear campaigns are common practices by anti-fans who target a certain entertainer they hate.

Sometimes, anti-fans turn into stalkers or criminals. Yun Ho from TVXQ famously had an anti-fan spike his drink with super glue and had to have his stomach pumped.

Those are just the haters. There are those who profess love by cutting themselves and writing letters in blood, before sending their bloody epistolary packages to their idols.

Admittedly, these are the extreme cases. But I also wonder if anti-fan behaviour is encouraged by the record labels to generate more publicity for their artists.

Who knows? Still, it is undeniable that K-pop exerts a hypnotic pull. It is unstoppable. It is a virus that spreads like fire over the radio, on television and in ringtones.

I know this because I had to do research for this article and listen to a lot of fabricants perform their music. Before I know it, the melodies have wormed their way into the folds of my grey matter, made my synapses misfire, caused me to lose control of my wrist on my computer mouse - till I am clicking on the same video in YouTube again and again, staring glassy-eyed at my screen, alone, at four in the morning.

"Resist!" the sentient part of my brain cried softly. To which Super Junior cheerily replied: "Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry..."

Anyway Straits Times received a lot of letters that strongly disagree with the author's view. When I read the article last week, I was surprised by its highly-critical tone and choice of words used. It's a pretty bold move to associate K-pop with 'cult' and describe the artistes as 'fabricants', especially when there are so many ardent K-pop fans in Singapore.

I think the author has just made so many enemies with this single article...

To non-K-pop fans, do you agree with the article? Haha...

We know that this cute black and white bear is an endangered species. Here are some facts about them.

- Pandas are native to only China.

- It is believed that only about 2000 pandas are living in the wild.

- There are only 2 known species of panda. The black and white Giant Panda we commonly know of, as well as the dark and light brown Qinling Panda. Red Panda, which looks like a raccoon, is not a panda species. (Just like how Guinea Pig is not a pig)

- China used to give pandas to other countries, but now only loans for 10 years.

- Panda is used for diplomacy and establishing good relationship between China and other countries.

- All pandas in zoos around the world have a Chinese name.

- There are no pandas in Africa and South America zoos.

- Pandas have a very high upkeep cost. They have a huge appetite and eat lots of bamboo in a day.

- Pandas are not very active in breeding. Researchers have even resorted to using panda porn videos to stimulate them.

- A pair of pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia was initially scheduled to arrive in Singapore in the second half of 2011, in view of the opening of River Safari in the first half of 2012. There is no news about their arrival yet.

Hey guys, after a few weeks of break i am finally back to my column.
Must take this chance to suan Miss Mango and Miss Reiko who said that they wanted to start a new column but until now 什么屁都没有. Haha. Wait until neck become very long liao lor. Lol.
Aniway, would like to say a big thank you to everyone who have participated in the nomination for Jupiter Awards 2011. The nomination will be out tomorrow!!! So please do look out for it and see if your favourite is IN or OUT this year.
We have already confirmed that this year's award ceremony will be held on the 18th Dec. And the results will be posted here asap after we announce all the winners that day. So do check out for that as well.

Xinmsn Reports:
After joyous news of his wife's expectancy broke out a few days ago, Hong Kong singer Andy Lau admitted that his wife Carol Chu conceived naturally a few days ago, but did not reveal which stage of the pregnancy she is at now.

Yesterday, a Taiwanese magazine claimed that Carol is actually six months pregnant, instead of the reported four months. According to the report, Carol has been pregnant for more than half a year.

As Carol is 45 years old this year, this is a high-risk pregnancy for her and Andy has taken various precautions to protect this "Dragon baby" by engaging masters to pray and bless his family. He also hired three bodyguards and a driver to take care of his wife.

Andy was even said to have sent Carol overseas, to ensure that she has a smooth and peaceful pregnancy.

Heeding Andy's advice, Carol made sure she had ample rest and did not move unnecessarily to ensure a healthy growth and smooth delivery for her baby.

And to think that one of 2NE1's member, Park Bom, was suffering from bad flu.
She insisted on singing live as she was feeling better but apologized in advanced if her performance was not of standard.
But hello, what flu are you talking about. This performance is international standard la. No sign of flu or what so ever from Park Bom.

Revealed: The Jobs That Singaporeans Shun

With their modest wages and unsociable weekend shifts, they are the jobs that Singaporeans shun.

Waiting tables, cleaning and working in telesales or as a retail or warehouse assistant are the least popular positions among citizens, 10 recruitment agencies told The Straits Times.

Workers continue to turn such jobs down despite a recent government bid to encourage firms to hire more Singaporeans rather than rely on foreigners.

Their main reasons for shunning these jobs are that they pay too little or involve awkward working hours.

"Singaporeans don't like to come back to work during the weekends or do shift work," said consultant Kristen Lee of recruitment agency Kelly Services. "Salary-wise, they can't accept the rates as well."

Last month, the Government beefed up guidelines on fair employment practices after it emerged that certain firms had been deliberately hiring foreigners over suitable locals.

Employers were told to make sure job advertisements were open to Singaporeans, work with educational institutions and recruitment agencies to attract citizens and develop skills of their local staff members so they can take up higher-end positions.

But recruitment agencies and companies said that while they are willing to hire Singaporeans and give them priority, a handful of jobs are consistently shunned.

Only a minority take up these positions, said Lee. It is hard to find citizens who do not mind low pay with little career advancement.

She said that even Institute of Technical Education graduates have high expectations these days. Many continue studying for a diploma to upgrade themselves.

David Ang, executive director of the Singapore Human Resources Institute, said: "The education level of Singaporeans has gone up, and so have their expectations. Also, parents invest in their children and expect them to take up respectable jobs."

Wong Shin Shin, human resources manager of Halcon Primo Logistics in Jurong, said her company has struggled to hire locals to work as warehouse assistants, even though they are paid about 30 per cent more than foreigners.

According to a salary guide by Kelly Services, warehouse assistants earn up to $1,700 a month.

Wong said her company has put out job advertisements for three months, but the response has been poor.

"Locals feel that it is a low-level, manual job, and that they have no prospects," she said. "Some locals come in, work for one day and then walk off. They say it is not the kind of job they want to do."

Jeffrey Ng, who owns Cleanex Maintenance Services at Orchard Road, said it is hard to find Singaporeans willing to work as cleaners.

"They demand better conditions, a five-day week and a location near their homes," he said. "It is difficult to accommodate. On top of it, sometimes, they don't want to do toilet washing. They want easy jobs with high pay."

Ng has about 190 cleaning staff, about 5 per cent of whom are from China. They earn between $800 and $1,200 a month.

Counsellor Sheena Jebal has seen companies offer jobs to unemployed people who are picky and find excuses to decline them.

She said one employer was offering $2,000 instead of the market rate of $1,300 to hire a Singaporean as a lorry driver to deliver pastries. But there were no takers, said Jebal of non-profit group NuLife Care and Counselling.

One unemployed man asked whether he could start later because he had a function to attend.

Another said he had no money to take public transport to work. The firm offered to give him an extra $50 a day for a week, but he declined.

Jebal said other reasons for Singaporeans turning down jobs include the distance they would have to travel to their workplaces and reporting to work early.

Let's face it. SG is an affluent country, and Sgeans have high hopes and expectations. Being in the center of development, entertainment and prosperity, we wish to enjoy life as much as possible. Who wants to slog his/her life in work till retirement?

We value weekends like gold, because it's the only common time we can spend with our family and friends. We hate to wake up early in the morning and travel so far to our workplace. We want high paying jobs so that we can spend on what we like, such as big houses (large HDB flats with wide rooms that can place many furniture), cars (taking public transport is dreadful), food (sick of eating at hawker centre/food court everyday), overseas trips (SG is boring and has nothing to see), as well as other material needs. We dislike stressful and demanding jobs, yet reject mundane and repetitive ones.

Sacrifice sleep? Lose weekends? Low pay? Tiring job? NO WAY!!

Even the unemployed are thinking, "I need a job but I still want to have a life." The unemployed in SG must be very lucky; they still can afford to be picky.

If that's what Sgeans willingly give up on, then don't complain if foreigners pick the remnants.

A seasonal phenomenon that happens every exam period.

There were news recently about the space crunch in SMU study benches. Heard from the provost that Utown is packed and there are many other non-NUS students using the areas too. Wanted to find a place in Central Forum for project discussion but all the tables were occupied. Friend is ranting in FB about how he has to go to school library early to secure a seat before it fills up.

I can't really tell the proportion but it seems that more students prefer to study outside than at home. I must be one of the minority who prefers (and insists) to study at home. Unless I've no choice but to stay in school for hours waiting for the next lesson/activity to start, I would always choose to return home and mug. Somehow I feel that my mugging efficiency drops when I study outside. (Maybe it's not the case, it's just psychological.)

Reasons why I don't study outside:
- Easily distracted by surroundings. There are people talking, making noise, walking around etc.
- Dirtiness. The good thing is most NUS benches are quite well maintained. Most tables I come across look clean. However the same can't be said 'elsewhere'. Imagine a bird poo/lizard shit staring at you studying.
- Discomfort. Seats are usually hard and stiff. It's hard to rest and relax at times.
- Lack of information access. If you bring along your laptop, smart phone, all the relevant notes and textbooks with you, it should be fine. The problem comes when you wish to lighten your load, forget to bring certain stuff, laptop battery goes flat with no available electrical socket nearby, etc.

Reasons why I study at home:
(Basically it's the opposite of what I've mentioned above...)
- Quiet environment. No strangers to distract me. Some people might be distracted by their family members but my family is more of the quiet-type hehe.
- Comfort. Where can be more comfortable than your own home? This is the best aspect a home can offer, but some people see it as a downside, when it comes to forcing yourself to study. The bed must be the prime culprit.
- FOC. I don't have to buy drinks to occupy a seat in Starbucks or Mac. If I'm thirsty or hungry, the kitchen is within my reach. No need to spend time and money on transport.
- Privacy. Unlike outside, if I want to use the toilet, I don't have to worry about leaving my stuff alone. Laptop won't get stolen and notes won't get blown away. I can stretch my body freely, make some noise (of accomplishment), adopt an unglam posture without scrutiny by others.

I think most people study outside because their homes cannot provide a conducive studying environment, not because they really want to study outside with a bunch of strangers. Does this mean that people who study well at home are more disciplined because they can resist the temptations from all the comfort available at home? Or are they just lazy to travel out of home?

Whatever the case, we should be thanked for not adding on to the space crunch or causing convenience to genuine patrons to cafes and fast food outlets. Hehe.

With so many mischievous kids around, I guess teachers often get angry easily.

'Shut up' is only the tip of rude iceberg

LIKE Madam Alicia Hock ('Teachers should stop saying 'shut up' to pupils'; Nov 4), my son's teacher in Primary 1 admonishes the class with words like 'rascal', 'stupid', 'sickening', 'nonsense' and belittling phrases like 'You've got the cheek to tell me this'.

When I raised the matter with the school, it did not help. The teacher continued her impolite ways and I wonder how such teachers can impart values to pupils.

The problem can worsen for pupils like my son, who has learning difficulties and attends a support programme in school. He has problems grappling with mainstream subjects and completing worksheets on time. Yet the special circumstance appears to have been lost on the teacher who penalises my son, as well as pupils who cannot complete worksheets, by making them stay back in class instead of going for PE lessons. When I sought the teacher's assistance in offering more help for my son, her reply was that she had 28 pupils to consider in class.

So the burden of offering extra help to my son falls on me, a single, working mother. It takes me at least three hours daily to complete my son's workbook and that excludes preparing him for bite-size fortnightly assessments for English, Maths and Tamil.

While I hope that the holistic strategy promised by the Education Ministry for Primary 1 will ease the teaching burden, I have my doubts when I think of the struggle my son and I must endure merely to complete his homework.

This is a reply to the letter I've posted last entry. It highlights other 'pride-hurting' phrases used by teachers on students.

'Stupid' is pretty common. That's just stating the fact. Recalling some things I used to do in school, it feels rather stupid. I make stupid mistakes. Well, we all do too. However there are some who find it hard to accept, and feel greatly hurt when such words are used on them. No matter what, the most important thing is to recognize our own mistakes, learn from them and move on.

On the other hand 'Idiot' is less common. I remember a teacher in secondary school who used 'bloody idiot' to scold students. I think this is much stronger than 'stupid'. Probably we were still less matured then, so this phrase didn't have much impact. If a university lecturer were to use 'bloody idiot' on students, I think it will create a big hoo-ha. If someone scolds me 'bloody idiot' now, I'll be more hurt than when scolded the same phrase during secondary school.

Looking at the synonyms of 'stupid' - dumb, fool, moron, etc - we have an idea of the degree of insult and belittlement of each word. Which word are you the most (or least) sensitive to?

When people get angry, they need to vent their frustration through words. Teachers are human too. Let's take it with a pinch of salt.

Not to mention students who are totally immune to such words, and persist in their mischief despite repeated scoldings and warnings. Kids don't think words as deep as adults eh? That's good in a way too.

On to the news, we mentioned about MAMA Awards being held in Singapore on 29th Nov this year.
Good news to all those who are unable to attend the live show due to budget constraints, no tickets or not free.
According to Channel U's facebook, they will be telecasting the event LIVE from 4pm onwards. So you guys will be able to see the red carpet and live performances.
Think you would have trouble following the Korean language? Fret not, subtitles will be available. So excited. I'm definitely gluing my face to the TV　that day. Don't ask me out ar. I'm going to be couch potato. Haha.

According to the Hong Kong media, Hong Kong singer Edison Chen and Cammi Xie are still together and did not break up as both parties had claimed.

Edison and Cammi's relationship was revealed, after steamy photos of the pair were leaked. Later, Cammi gave contradicting statements regarding her virginity. She also subsequently hinted that Edison is impotent.

An infuriated Edison then chided Cammi through the phone. He was said to have used an unknown number to call the 16-year-old model because he was afraid of leaving any evidence.

Someone later advised Edison to be nicer to Cammi, and that he should not provoke her anymore, lest the model leak more information to the media. Hence, Edison called Cammi again, and expressed that he still liked her a lot and wished that they could continue to date.

When reporters questioned Cammi if Edison had spewed vulgarities at her, the model nodded silently. She said that Edison used to call her "baby", but he suddenly turned hostile towards her. His attitude upset her.

Cammi also emphasised that they had already broken up with each other, when the media probed their relationship again.

It was also rumoured that Edison not only coaxed Cammi to keep tight-lipped about their relationship with honeyed words, he had also threatened to reveal their two-minute erotic video clip.

There were other rumours which said that Cammi's parents had met up with Edison to request for the clip, but Edison rejected their request and had asked them not to say anything more.

Teachers should stop saying 'shut up' to pupils

WHEN I was a pupil more than 30 years ago, it was common for teachers to tell their classes to 'shut up' when they wanted to quieten us. Because it was a routine admonishment, it took me many years before I realised it was impolite.

So when I started work as a polytechnic lecturer a few years ago, it was 'please be quiet' instead. To be sure, the phrase was less effective but far more sensible than the alternative.

But I was dismayed when my son, a Primary 1 pupil, told me that his teacher frequently resorted to telling the class to 'shut up' when the pupils spoke too loudly. How can a teacher impart the values of proper behaviour when she is unaware of her own behaviour?

I am certain Primary 1 pupils understand the meaning of the more polite reminder to 'please be quiet', or the gesture of putting a finger to the lips.

If the noise persists, there must be other ways to instil order. Consider this example by an American teacher who uses a jar of marbles to correct misbehaviour or reward proper behaviour.

She takes out a marble when the class misbehaves and puts one in when pupils behave well. When the jar is filled, each pupil receives a reward like ice cream.

Surely, primary school teachers can craft equally creative ways to instil class discipline.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat recently announced a policy focusing on character building and positive values in teaching.

I hope all teachers, starting from those in Primary 1, can take the first step by banning 'shut up' from their vocabulary in school.

I guess the consciousness that 'shut up' is not a very nice thing to say has led people to use alternative less-rude commands such as 'keep quiet' or simply 'shhhh'.

'Shut up' hasn't been used by teachers and instructors in higher institutions since my secondary school days. They were occasionally used by student leaders to show their frustration towards inattentive group of students, and between classmates to express their intolerance towards 'lesson-disruptors' and busybodies. Compared to the more widely used vulgarities, I think 'shut up' is relatively mild, and will not arouse much displeasure and anger among people.

Even during NS, notorious for the indiscriminate use of vulgarities and hurting remarks, 'shut up' is hardly used, at least from my personal experience. Even if I'm faced with a group of noisy brats, the first utterance that comes to my mind would be 'keep quiet'.

I can't remember clearly how often 'shut up' was uttered by teachers during my primary school or kindergarten days. But surely, such command was indeed being used.

Whether such commands are effective in quieting down a hyperactive crowd is another story. Rather than the choice of words, I think the loudness of the commanding voice is a more important factor, especially towards kids who are still oblivious towards the connotation of 'shut up'. Of course saying 'shut up' instead of 'keep quiet' to adults will have a much greater impact.

As kids grow up, it is necessary for them to recognise the right situation to use 'shut up'. We probably don't remember how we did it through the process. It just comes naturally as part of social-learning, as we interact more with people around us.

Selina is finally married. Congratulations!!!

Xinmsn reports:

Taiwanese singer Selina Jen finally married long-time fiancé Richard Chang on Oct 31.

At the press conference for his new book Yong Ai Shou Hou (Staying by with love) yesterday, Selina's father let on that his daughter would not be able to become pregnant in the next three years.

On his new book, Father Jen said, "I sold my life story, in exchange for everybody's support. Proceeds from the sale of the book will all go to the Sunshine Foundation for burnt victims."

When asked if he was eager to have his own grandchildren, Father Jen expressed, "Selina has to take different medication daily. She is not able to give birth now. She has to wait for two to three years before her skin tissues stabilise."

However, he emphasised that he would respect the newlyweds' decisions.

Additionally, Father Jen shared how his wife was heartbroken after Selina's accident.

"I wouldn't give birth to her, if I knew this was going to happen. Then, she won't have to go through such torture," Mother Jen apparently said.

Mother Jen also revealed that Selina contemplated suicide many times after her accident. Father Jen also asked her why she did not use a body double for her scene in the drama.

To which Selina replied, "Luckily I didn't use a body double. I'd be stricken with guilt, if [the double] was hurt instead."

The singer believes that she is able to receive a huge compensation and comprehensive treatment because of who she is.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) would be held in Singapore this year!!!!

Jupiter's Special

Korea got so many successful groups.
Just look at the nomination list at this year's MAMA awards and you will know that the Korean music industry is literally dominated by groups.

Well, we have up and coming groups in the Mandarin music industry.
By will they be able to match up with the Koreans?
Today's Jupiter's Special will featuring 2 groups, local group, By2 and Taiwanese JPM.

This time during their promotional activities for this album.
One question keeps appearing By2 "有没有" went for plastic surgery.
They say its because they changed their makeup. Well possible. I dont really know how to tell if a celebrity went for plastic surgery, but they do look different this time round.
Of cos dancing skills 没话说. Of cos is very good.

The test for singing skill comes when people sing slow songs.
I think they have improved this time round in terms of singing.

Okay after By2, next up is JPM.
JPM consists of three guys, 小杰(Jay), 王子(Prince) and 毛弟(Mo-di). Hence the group name JPM. The name looks familiar? Well, 小杰 and 王子 used to be from 棒棒堂 but they had split up to form their own group. 毛弟 used to be from the 棒棒堂 show as well and he has joined his brother 王子 to form this new group.

I think this next song is pretty cool.
A little bit of 中国风 mixed with modern elements.
It is good that they carve out a path of themselves without copying the Korean model blindly.
This song is called 那不是雪中红.

I must admit JPM's vocal is not that strong. By2 is far more vocally capable than JPM in my opinion.
But JPM is very lucky in that they always get songs that are so suitable to them.
Very good strategy to take.
Just like this next song here, very 讨喜. I guess very few people will hate it.
This is 平凡的美丽.

Of cos, idol groups nowadays cannot escape electrical music.
Now matter how they hate it also must 意思意思 sing some electric.
But personally i feel this song too techno. Haha.
Must have the brainwash factor like how those K-Pop people do their thing ma.
This song don't have that for me. Haha.
And techno music is either enticing or irritating.
Well, listen for yourselves ba.
But not to discredit them. The first two songs were relatively well done.
This song probably not my cup of tea.

Writing classes a must for NUS freshmen
Boosting communication skills will give graduates an edge, says provost

Students who are unable to articulate their ideas clearly and who do not make eye contact during presentations are among those that National University of Singapore (NUS) provost Tan Eng Chye has come across.

To lick these problems, the university is introducing compulsory writing modules for about 1,500 freshmen from August next year.

Professor Tan told The Straits Times that this initiative aims to give its graduates an edge over others. For a start, the pilot will involve about a quarter of first-year students. NUS accepts about 6,500 freshmen each year.

These students will come from either a big faculty or from several smaller faculties. Eventually, all freshmen will be expected to take the modules.

- From August next year, about 1,500 freshmen - about one-quarter of all first-year students - will be required to take the writing classes.

- The writing modules will have themes such as press freedom, information and technology, or the environment.

- Students will learn a range of skills, from how to give effective presentations and take good notes, to how to analyse texts and construct coherent arguments.

Hmm doesn't NUS have writing courses already? That was what I thought when I saw the article.

Freshmen are required to take QET (unless they scored good grades in GP) upon admission. Should they fail to make the mark, they would need to take additional English modules. Even though I was waived from QET, I still had to take a writing and critique module during my first year. This is a requirement from Engin Faculty.

I'm not so sure if the other faculties have such language/writing based modules. But it seems that NUS has been trying to 'secure' our English standards all along. Apparently this isn't enough, as judged by the provost.

Even junior colleges have GP, and one of its main aims is to prepare students for university writing demands. (Whether GP is useful or not, is another issue though.) Now that NUS is introducing such classes, doesn't it feel a little late? They should have introduced this long ago.

That's from an objective point of view. Personally, I'm still very much reluctant in taking writing modules, tackling with written reports and such. I wouldn't want to get chosen, if I were a freshman haha. How are they selecting the 'lucky few' anyway? By QET? They should prioritize PRCs hehe.

Maybe our English standards have dropped over the years. That explains the need now and not in the past.

Probably the recent emphasis on language standards and communication skills has led the school to realise how poor our English is.

Is SG facing a language crisis now? We are neither here nor there.

Actors and Actresses nominated could be of any nationality.
Please state the actor and actresses name and their respective show u want them to be nominated for when u are nominating.
Unclear nominations will not be taken into consideration.
Please also state which award u want to nominate them for.
Try to state the character's name if the actor or actresses or the productions are not well known.

We all know that Selina is getting married! So how’s the preparation going? On the day itself, famous Taiwan variety show hosts阿Ken and 纳豆will be hosting the wedding dinner! I suppose we all expect the bride to be all excited about the wedding, but Selina’s NOT. She’s calm and composed and playing mahjong. Lol.. So in the end, 纳豆asked for a meeting to discuss about the wedding, and Selina teased him by saying, “哈！你也会紧张喔”。Loads of famous politicians and artistes will be making speeches, so the hosts joked that they will be eating the 10 dishes while the big shots make their speeches. Lol..

Hot news from our Mr. Lu. Lol.. 卢广仲 is in China to perform for 西湖音乐节. When he arrived at 杭州, he was really excited and took loadsa photos as well as admire the beautiful scenary. (Hmm.. I too wana go 杭州!) And when you get to 杭州, you will be captivated by the river water and want to go for a ride on a little boat. How poetic! But Mr. Lu didn’t do that, because he wana ‘nap nap nap’. So off he went to the dreamland in a sunshine afternoon…

Whee.. Fashion always become really exciting on 大明星! Only they are able to do exaggerating kind of style~ wahaha.. Anyway~ Next up, we have news from Lady Gaga! And I only got to know that her Chinese name is 女神卡卡. Lol.. Oh so slowwww.. Yes, but that’s not the point. The point is, Lady Gaga is in New Delhi, India! India is a beautiful place! Im gona go there some day. Apparently, Lady Gaga also loves India! So she dyed her hair into the colours of India flag, and in the photo I found, she wore this lovely colourful dress, which makes me full of admiration for her. How beautiful! No gothic, no meat dress. Colours colours and more colours. How GLAM!! Btw she's there to perform for the F1. Her tweet: "I am finally here! What a dream come true! Performing at F1 in India."

Do your know Makiyo? You MUST KNOW MAKIYO! Makiyo released her album called 《夜电》. The funny part is her dance teacher who choreograph for her MV's dance is under great constraints, coz she doesnt want complicated dance. lol.. So how uncomplicated did it become? Take a look at the video~ Her co-dancers are very busy. lol.. BUT I still love Makiyo! She's funny :)

那英released her new album after many years! This song that I am featuring is called 《长镜头》. The music was by Tanya and lyrics by 小寒. You'll recognize a Tanya style melody :) Enjoy~

Next up, Im introducing a very interesting song sung by Soda Green. Seriously the song is v nice. Esp the chorus. Gives a very shiok feeling after listening. lol.. Prob of the lyrics?

Watch an MV movie by 大S and 阿信! lol.. This time 大S becomes a vampire! We have always know that 大S prob have a gothic side of her. This time she fulfills her desire to become a vampire. The music is not something I like, but interesting MV. lol..

Finally, I wana intro a very cool dance performance by Lollipop F. I have never been a Lollipop F fan, but the dance performance they did at Kang Xi is a MUST WATCH. They are SO GOOD! And it's quite funny coz they incorporated a segment of an MV that 蔡康永 acted in recently. I've attached the original video after the dance video. Enjoy Lollipop F's dance! Best dance this year!!

When I came across the title of this article, I had to read it twice to confirm that I'm not reading it wrongly.

Man claimed to be beaten up by wife and kids

A man said that he was beaten up by his wife and children, then locked naked in a room.

Mr Chen (55, taxi driver) recounted the unusual incident that happened at about 10.30pm on 21 October, at his home on the eighth floor of Blk 422, Bukit Batok West Ave 2.

According to Mr Chen, he had chided his wife that evening for neglecting their family. This resulted in his wife becoming violent and attacking him. He said his son joined in the attack and strangled him from behind, while his daughter filmed the whole fight with her mobile phone.

"They attacked me and kept trying to snatch my keys from my hand. My wife then stripped me stark naked, without even leaving me my underwear" said Mr Chen.

"I had to call my brothers who stay in the same block for help," he added.

However, when his brothers arrived, Mr Chen's family refused to open the door and both sides ended up shouting and swearing at each other. The police eventually came to diffuse the explosive situation.

Mr Chen has since obtained a Personal Protection Order to protect himself from his family.

Mr Chen has been married to his wife for more than 30 years and has two daughters and a son. He intends to divorce his wife after the incident.

He believes that his wife had gone astray and begun neglecting the family due to bad influences from her friends. He also told reporters that he is afraid to go home now as his son is very violent.

The police have classified the case as domestic violence and are investigating.

This must be a lesser-known case of domestic violence. It's probably still normal if the wife beats up her husband, but when the kids join in the beating too, somehow it sounds scary...and what's up with stripping naked...

Chart-topping act Westlife has decided to call it a day following the release of their Greatest Hits Collection later this year and a farewell tour next year.

The Irish group has been together for 14 years, and had 26 top ten hits including 14 number one singles. Their albums have collectively sold over 44 million copies around the world.

In the official statement dated 19 October 2011, Westlife said, "We today announce our plan to go our separate ways after a greatest hits collection this Christmas and a farewell tour next year. The decision is entirely amicable and after spending all of our adult life together so far, we want to have a well-earned break and look at new ventures."

"We see the greatest hits collection and the farewell tour as the perfect way to celebrate our incredible career along with our fans. We are really looking forward to getting out on the tour and seeing our fans one last time."

"Over the years Westlife has become so much more to us than just a band. Westlife are a family. We would like to thank our fans who have been with us on this amazing journey and are part of our family too."

I believed the music videos are all filmed in Maldives if im not wrong.
Which explains why the scenery is so beautiful and awe inspiring.

This is already the third song but i feel like the song he sings in this album are quite similar.
I think it would be better if he try out other genres so that his songs don't sound the same. Consumers nowadays quite picky one and with one whole album the same kind of songs they will get sian. Haha.

If you have been following my Twitter update you would have known that Zhui Xing went to watch 陈洁仪's “想象空间” concert. It was Superb!!!!

陈洁仪昨晚风骚开唱，撇未婚生子、退出乐坛传言。

　　放弃室内体育馆的大舞台，本地天后级歌手陈洁仪的首场“想象空间”演唱会，昨晚滨海湾金沙大剧院引爆，吸引约2000观众前去朝圣。

　　约两个多小时的演唱会上，她演唱了出道以来的经典歌曲，包括《喜欢你》、《担心》、《看月亮》、《心痛》等，也改编翻唱了其他歌手的金曲，像是陈奕迅的《兄妹》、黄大炜的《你把我灌醉》、邓丽君的《忘记他》、张国荣的《追》等。

　　出道18年的作品不少，陈洁仪笑说，为了能满足观众和自己，于是这次为个唱选歌，挑曲目根据三大准则。

Jupiter's Special

This semester i got a chance to write an essay in school about the Korean Wave.
Handed in the essay last week already and quite a lot of insightful findings that i had.
So i figure out that i will do another K-Pop special this week.

Nice catchy melody and the dance step is so sexy with a tinge of attitude.

On Oct 3, 35-year-old Hong Kong singer Gigi Leung married her Spaniard boyfriend Sergio on the island of Ibiza at 8pm Hong Kong time.

The singer reportedly spent HK$2 million (S$400,000) on her wedding and had invited more than 80 friends and family members to witness her nuptials in Spain.

The groom had reportedly done the preparations for the wedding including flight arrangements, hotel and selection of wedding venue. Sergio even commissioned a local wedding gown designer to specially tailor-make the bridal gown for his bride.

As Gigi's mother has been a vegetarian for years, the couple decided the serve vegetarian dishes at the banquet. Sergio's family supported the couple's idea. It's no wonder Gigi's mother would not stop complimenting her son-in-law.

Gigi and Sergio's wedding was held at the beach. The couple shed tears of joy, when they exchanged their vows. Gigi was even so emotional when Sergio slipped the ring unto her finger that she cried. The groom later wiped her tears away.

The singer's bridesmaids, including Valen Hsu and Charlie Yeung, and a couple of other guests were moved to tears too.

Although this was not the first time Gigi had donned a wedding gown, as she had worn countless in her movies, the feeling of putting on a gown which belonged to her felt different. Gigi smiled and said that her dream had finally come true.

She also described her husband as a naïve, straightforward and humourous gentlemen and gave him full marks.

"I never thought that I'd meet someone who would treat me well and make me feel like I am living in a dream. My mother and brother adore him too, even my friends compliment him. I feel really happy," Gigi said.

OMG. The Noose is nominated for the Emmy Awards!!! Yes, you didn't see wrongly. It is THE Emmy Awards.

After four successful seasons and bagging two awards at the 2010 Asian Television Awards, local Ch5 comedy series, The Noose Season 3, gains international recognition and nabs its first nomination in the annual International Emmy Awards.

The only local programme running for the Best Comedy series, the International Emmy Awards -- similar to the annual Emmy Awards -- is presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and acknowledges the best television programmes produced and aired outside the US.

The main cast members of The Noose exchanged congratulatory messages over Twitter last night when they learnt of the lauded nomination.

Fans of this satirical series will be in for a treat. Ch5 Senior Producer Sebastian Leang shared with us that a fifth season is currently in the works and is expected to have a Dec 27 broadcast.

"We were told that a lot of people asked and wanted more than one season a year, which is why we're coming back earlier.

"We're going to introduce a new segment. Previously it was 'We Are Singaporeans' but for this season, we will be going around to get Singaporeans to complain instead," he added.

So will the gang be attending the awards ceremony in November?

Alaric replied, "At the moment, news is still very new, it's day-old news at least. There aren't any plans yet, but I've already chope (colloquial term for 'reserved') my seats with the producers."

Shortage of question papers forces NUS to cancel economics exam

SINGAPORE - Some 700 first-year undergraduates at the National University of Singapore (NUS), who were supposed to sit for a paper on managerial economics last Saturday, were told on the spot that the exam was cancelled - because not enough question papers were printed.

In response to MediaCorp's queries, an NUS spokesperson attributed the gaffe to "human error".

The university is looking into the matter "to strengthen the processes to prevent this from happening again", the spokesperson added.

According to the spokesperson, the mid-year test for the module "BSP 1005 Managerial Economics" was scheduled to be held at 2pm last Saturday.

The spokesperson said 750 copies were supposed to be printed for a class of 725.

The lecturer-in-charge of the exam, who works in the banking industry, had another class in the morning and he discovered at "about 2pm" that there was a shortage of 200 scripts, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said: "The lecturer-in-charge discussed with fellow colleagues on duty that day on the various available options. There was insufficient time to make additional copies as another test had been scheduled in the same hall immediately after the stated test.

"After considering all options, the lecturer-in-charge made the difficult decision of cancelling the test. The lecturer-in-charge then made the announcement to the students, took responsibility and apologised for the human error made, and followed up with an explanation email to all affected students."

The mid-year test would have made up 30 per cent of the students' overall grades. The weightage will now be shifted to other assignments.

In an email sent to the affected undergraduates last Saturday - a copy of which was obtained by MediaCorp - the course coordinator said: "On behalf of the entire team, I am really sorry for today's fiasco. We fell short in the number of printed papers we had and we could not find a way to make this work."

Pointing out the difficulty of rearranging another sitting for the exam, he added that there will not be a mid-year exam.

Adding that the situation was "completely unintended", the coordinator said the question paper will also be made available to the students for them to try the questions for practice and for tutorial discussions.

An affected undergraduate, who wished to be known only as Mr Tan, said he felt "very frustrated and annoyed".

He added: "I studied so hard for it and it got cancelled at the last minute."

Who would expect such an important event to be cancelled just because there is insufficient scripts...

Most of the students interviewed by the media expressed frustration because their efforts in studying was wasted. If this were to happen to a primary school, secondary school or JC, I suppose almost everyone will be cheering in joy.

It reminds me of my early school days when the class often hoped that tests/quizzes will be postponed or cancelled, due to teachers taking MC or various possible screw-ups. Sadly most of the time such case didn't happen.

It seems like there is no other way out of this paper-shortage problem. Firstly, the test cannot be delayed since the venue will be used by another scheduled test immediately following that. Secondly, if the test is delayed, this may affect the schedule of some students who have other commitments right after that. You know, university students are busy people, like working adults. Thirdly, the test cannot be rescheduled due to the same reason above.

As you can see, the rigidity of schedules prevents the implementation of possible countermeasures. When some event is fixed in a certain timeslot, it must happen during this slot, otherwise off you go. This is especially true if the group involved is huge, and everyone must do the same thing together at the same time.

People may say: "There are so many copiers in NUS, 200 scripts can be easily produced in a short time." or "Why not just change to another venue? NUS is so huge." The facilities may be sufficient to cope, but it will be a logistic nightmare. Imagine trying move 700+ students, or even conveying message to all of them.

There was also dissatisfaction regarding the 30% weightage being absorbed to other assessment modes. This is so typical of a university student's mentality of "It is better to spread out weightage among more assessments, just in case I do badly for one."

Rather than disrupting everyone's schedules and receive hordes of complaints from other indirectly affected people, cancelling the test seems like the best damage control. Who cares if you had wasted time studying? At least it is just a minor psychological impact which affects only the 700+ students involved. (You have to study for the final exam eventually right?)

During the recording of "Here Comes Kang Xi" the day before, Dee Hsu admitted to her co-host Kevin Tsai that she is indeed three-months pregnant.

As she already has two daughters, it was said that hubby, Mike Hsu and her were keen to have a baby boy this time. The couple was even rumoured to have sought various methods in order to conceive a baby boy.

Denying all claims of such attempts, Dee revealed that hubby and her had consumed lots of vegetables and meat for her second child, as it was said that it would help in conceiving a baby boy.

However, the child was another girl. As a result, the couple has decided to let nature take its course this time round.

"When I wanted to get pregnant, it didn't happen. And just when we decided to give up, I get pregnant. So it's best to relax. Sometimes, if you want something too bad, you might not get it."

She added that since symptoms of her current pregnancy were similar to her previous experiences; she believes that there is a huge possibility that baby number three will be another girl. The host has even selected the English name "Alice" for the baby.

She quipped, "I am the third child in my family. I am filial and very good at making money. Having a daughter is great!"

Meanwhile, Dee's elder sister, Barbie Hsu, had also congratulated Dee on her pregnancy.

In a post on her microblog, Barbie wrote, "Congratulations to my beloved sister on her third pregnancy! We are all very happy! I will be there with you all the way and be the first to tell the baby 'Aunty loves you'!"

Dee will continue to host "Here Comes Kang Xi", for as long as her health allows her. Co-host Kevin has also confirmed that he will be taking a break from the show when Dee goes on maternity leave.

Hi hi.. I did not post any blog entry here for some time! lol.. Today, I'll post something I've written and posted in my personal blog. Just for sharing~ :)

今天看康熙来了，其中一集是关于中学时候，纯纯的爱情。听着那些故事，突然发现时间的流逝以及时代的变化。以前的我和现在的我不一样了。从什么时候开始，爱情不再那么神圣？与其让爱情变得那么随便，那么多心机，那么复杂，不如还原过去的单纯。虽然那时很傻，但那是珍贵的感情。即使是暗恋，也是全心全意的。最近看了一部电影叫做《80后》。电影里的一句对白让我觉得特别有味道。在一封信中，写了这么一段话：“少年的我们都是热烈而坚持的，那是一种光芒，引人入胜。我羡慕那些时光流逝，却没能改变他们的人。”

长大的世界究竟和青少年时期的世界有什么不同呢？或许我们以为自己不曾改变，但其实我们正随着时间和环境，不断地改变自己。或许我们不会名利熏心，但这凡尘的尘埃或许已弄脏了我们原本纯洁的心灵。一张白纸染上了颜料，还有机会补救吗？这是一个让人困惑的问题。如果说能，我们又不能否认发生在自己身上的变化。如果说不能，可我们还是中学时期的那个人。或许相貌改变了，但基本上，大致上还是没变的。

才24岁，过去的年少时光如何已变成昨日的一段故事和回忆。每当回忆起来，竟如此遥远，仿佛很久以前的事。这是怎么回事？难道人的记忆不能再更清晰些？难道2000至2009年之间发生的一切，永远无法再现？那时候有些巴士还是旧式的巴士。那时候，我以为自己最爱的就是这个男生。那时候，我们一起背着书包，笑着走出学校，到购物中心，一起买个小点心，就是愉快的一天。是我们的教育开发了我们的思想，让我们无法享受单纯的快乐？是我们的感官享受过太精致的东西，所以无法复原？还是回忆这东西，本来就以美化的姿态呈现？

在我搞不清楚时间、记忆与生命的关系前，我想我还是会时不时纠结于过去和现在的矛盾。这是一种自作虐。如果不往后看，不就开心多了？二十岁以前，可回忆的不多。二十岁以后，那么多的欢笑，那么多的经历，怎不叫人回忆起来，丢失了现在，迷失于过去的时空。可过去已是光和影。而现在已渐渐消失为光和影。

除了那吃吃喝喝的事儿之外，我庆幸还有一些其它的，可以记起，而这些往往都是比较冲动的情况下所做的。

人到底为什么会回忆起过去？

何不提醒自己carpe diem。还是视一切为虚幻，只把握现在，把握当下。

这是一种华人的习惯，给个圆满的结局。人总要有一点希望的。

Looks like Borders was really serious in clearing out EVERYTHING, including furniture and baskets, from its store.

BOOKS, shelves and plastic baskets - everything was for sale at Borders' last remaining outlet in Parkway Parade, which put up the shutters for the final time last night.

Hundreds of shoppers made a mad dash for the bookshop chain's remaining merchandise in its final hours of operation, before it closed at 9pm.

Shelves, foot stools, cabinets and even the computers at the cashiers' counters were available for purchase.

The beleaguered chain closed its main Singapore outlet, in Wheelock Place, on Aug 16.

The Borders Group in the United States declared bankruptcy in February. And last Wednesday, the US company terminated the right of Borders Singapore to use the Borders brand name, and gave it 90 days to cease all activities. The bookshop's lease on the Parkway Parade store expires at the end of next month.

The branch, which opened in 2007, had been holding a sale since last Thursday, but slashed prices further on the final day. While the sale had started at 70 per cent off remaining items, staff announced at 8pm yesterday that all store merchandise - excluding furniture - would go for just $1 in the last hour.

Even the bookshop's plastic baskets - bearing its name in its iconic font - were sold off for a dollar each. Housewife Tanti Lestari and her friend Riana Ferdianti bought five each.

'We want to keep them as souvenirs because we love Borders and come here a lot,' said Ms Lestari, 36.

Many of the bookshelves had been emptied out by last night, and others were dotted haphazardly with a jumble of books of different genres.

Several shoppers left empty handed or with just a few items, deciding that only the dregs of the store's collection remained.

'There's nothing much left, but I wanted to come because it was the last day. I'm sad to see it go,' said Mr Adam Tun-Aung, 29, a writer.

Melancholy music - including songs such as Sarah Brightman's Time To Say Goodbye - was played throughout the shop during its last few hours.

Despite this, staff maintained an upbeat mood, repeatedly making announcements to thank customers for their patronage and remind them to take good care of their books.

Staff stopped allowing customers to enter at around 8.50pm, so they could begin to empty the shop in time for its final closure.

As it emptied out, Borders staff formed a line near the entrance and clapped and cheered as the final customer left with his purchases.

Several shoppers lingered to take pictures, and a few children were spotted touching the walls before they left and yelling 'Bye, Borders!'

Staff from rival bookshop chain Harris and its parent company Popular Holdings also dropped by to lend their support.

Ms Michelle Yeung, 26, who used to work for Popular Holdings, said the booksellers' fraternity was tight-knit.

'Behind the scenes, we are all friends and there is no real rivalry,' she said.

'Though we used to be competitors, it's still sad that they are closing.'

With $1 going for each book, they might as well give them out for free haha. This must be a heaven for 'garang gunis'. You can just rush in during the final hour, grab the deals, and then resell the books for a profit. But those books that were left over till the last hour probably consisted more of 'junk' ones, like what you often see in second-hand book sales. Free also no one take lol.

Idea: If you have a friend who likes reading books, you can give him/her one whole basket of books for a budget of $20 only. You can just buy off the Borders basket too, and probably wrap the package with some transparent plastic sheet, and make it look like a hamper hehe.

Although I don't visit Borders often, I had some memories of it many years ago, during my primary school days. It was the only 'Big Bookstore' in Singapore before Kinokuniya opened. (Popular those kind not counted) I remember it was pretty cosy, at least for the kids' section. There were a lot of people browsing and playing around with the books. It felt like a library, except that the books have a price tag to it.

When Kinokuniya opened, I began to visit there more, as it has more Japanese-related books. There were rumours that 'Borders staff are not allowed to speak Mandarin, or other languages, except English even among themselves', which made me feel a little disgusted. Anyway Borders was forgotten by me since I ditched the habit of reading books. I just hope Kinokuniya won't close in SG.

Back to the closing sale, I was surprised to know even furniture like shelves and computers were on sale, but I was most amused by the two words in this sentence "all store merchandise - excluding furniture - would go for just $1".

Just imagine if even furniture were sold for 1 buck...a bunch of customers shifting all the shelves, stools, computers out of the store. That would be an ultimate clearout haha. Maybe carpets, lamps, aircon, etc can be put on sale too lol.

Hope their staff won't be 'sold' as cheaply as their stuff.

The sexuality of Wu Tsing-Fong, lead singer of Taiwanese group Sodagreen, has always been a mystery and a topic of heated discussion in showbiz.

Following news of the singer reportedly exchanging steamy text messages with a man in July this year, photos of the singer locking lips with yet another man have surfaced online recently.

In the photo, the man was seen holding hands with a smiling Tsing-Fong while sharing a kiss.

Responding through his manager, Tsing-Fong explained that the picture was taken during a game with friends.

"Everybody (who was present at then) voted for me, so I had to kiss a (guy) friend."

He added, "There were both guys and girls (at the gathering), and the guy is only a friend."

Yet, his remarks drew further responses from netizens, who questioned his decision to kiss a guy instead of a girl.

Although troubled by the controversial picture that had surfaced, Tsing-Fong remained cheery and was even in the mood to joke.

"(I look) ugly in this photo! (They) should have chosen a better one," he exclaimed, suggesting that there might just be more intimate and exciting interaction amongst the gathering-goers that day.

Is SHE's Hebe and Ella quarreling with Selina's fiance??

It was previously reported that S.H.E. member Selina Jen's fiancé Richard Chang attempted to incite disharmony amongst the S.H.E group members by "demanding" for an equal share of endorsement fee and implying that Hebe Tian is using Selina to promote her new song 'You'.

His actions infuriated both Hebe and Ella Chen when they got wind of the news and the duo blasted the lawyer on Facebook with remarks like: "not a man" and "not even comparable to the plaque between teeth".

After the news was reported yesterday, Richard posted a note of clarification on his microblog: "After our marriage was postponed due to [Selina's] injury, I have been trying to keep a low profile. Yet, the members of the media have been reporting [about me]! At the same time there must be people targeting me, eyeing for an opportunity [to stir things up], trying to blow things out of proportion. 大学迎新玩男压女　女生被占便宜崩溃大哭

大学迎新会游戏玩出火，男女生几乎“嘴对嘴”、“胸贴胸”，女生感觉被占便宜，当场崩溃飙泪。

本地一所大学上个月举行三天两夜迎新会，让刚入学的学生彼此认识，增强凝聚力（bonding）。可是有知情者向《联合晚报》爆料，迎新会的游戏毫无意义，完全没有顾及到学生的感受，有女生对一些需要和陌生男生有亲密互动的游戏更是感到不适，一些甚至还崩溃大哭。

知情者说，这些游戏强制男女双方蒙眼，在不知对方身份的情况下，以秘密伴侣（secret partner)配对参加游戏。知情者说，游戏让女生感到不自在，一位女生以头痛为理由拒玩伏地挺身的游戏，她一路忍到迎新会尾声，忍不住崩溃大哭。

知情者对游戏也有异议。他说：“伏地挺身的游戏尤其‘恐怖’，男女生面对面，一个仰、一个伏，男生如果手软，或想乘机占女生便宜跌下来，岂不是和女生嘴对嘴、胸贴胸？”

This is not the first time such news have appeared. Some years ago NUS and NTU had similar complaints as well.

It seems like no matter which school/faculty you go, the camp organizers have the same mindset: 1) They like gender games, 2) They want you to get wet and dirty, 3) They expect everyone to click with each other in an instant.

True that you can make good friends through such 'bonding' activities, but it does not simply work for everyone. Sadly, I don't have any close friends made via such camps. I rarely participate in camps anyway. Putting forward such 'intense' games as icebreakers might be going too far, making participants feel uncomfortable and nervous, thus resulting in backfire. Like the term suggests, you only want to 'break the ice', you don't wish to shatter the soul embedded in the ice.

Personally, I'm never fond of war games involving water bombs or flour mixture, activities requiring close body-to-body contact, passing the soggy fries/biscuit/noodles mouth to mouth, etc.

When camp organizers/councillors pass on their ideas to juniors, and continue to be involved in camps when they graduate and enter higher institutions, this is what happens. The same concept perpetuates forever. God knows how long these traditions have been passed down, and where they originated from.

Anyway I'm amused by this phrase '或想乘机占女生便宜跌下来'. I can't say for sure if some guys enjoy these gender games because they can 'take advantage', but it's amusing just imagining such situation...haha.

主播黄秀玲昨天播报新闻，在新闻播放的同时，拿起镜子整理头发。

读者吴婉真（46岁，秘书）告诉《新明日报》，她昨天傍晚6时30分观看新传媒新闻《狮城六点半》时，竟发现主播黄秀玲在新闻播放的同时，拿起镜子整理头发。

吴婉真认为，新闻主播虽需注意仪态和容貌，但既然是直播节目，就应专心在播报新闻上，而不应因为几根头发，而有这样的情况。

当时播放的新闻与希腊债务危机有关，电视银幕上本来播放新闻片段，却突然切换到摄影棚内的黄秀玲，随后立刻再转成播放新闻片段。

受访观众有人认为无大碍，有人认为主播不专心；‘漏网镜头’一年或发生一两次。

It's so easy to get complaints whenever something goes wrong during news broadcast, because we view news programme as serious, solemn and 'perfect'. We get annoyed easily whenever something appears out of normal, such as when the newscaster stumbles over words, wrong image is shown, or any miscellaneous technical errors.

Being a newscaster can be pretty stressful. They have to present themselves perfectly in front of the audience every night, reading scripts with perfect diction. Being a live broadcast, there is simply no room for error. When something goes wrong, the newscaster takes the bulk of the criticism, because he/she is the only person the audience can see. During any technical error, the newscaster has to deal promptly with it too, for instance, if the studio cannot receive live signals properly from the out-stationed reporter.

Every now and then such slip-ups will appear. Newscaster inadvertently saying the F-word (or S-word), a fly entering the studio and harassing the newscaster, etc.

Actually the first time I witnessed a slip-up in the news programme involved 黄秀玲 too. It was very very long ago, about 15 years ago when I was still in primary school...

When the programme started, 黄秀玲 was moving her head up and down, trying to search for something. Then she faced someone behind the camera, and uttered "我看不到 leh!?" in an irritated tone. Lol.

It totally shattered my image of a newscaster being demure, pleasant, and perfect. Anyway I was still small then, so I thought newscasters are like angels haha.

Newscasters are still human after all. They get irritated at things, and want to look pretty in front of the camera.

Maybe because they appear too 'perfectly' in the news, it can be amusing to see them sneeze, cough, yawn, hiccup, burp, 笑场, etc. But so far I haven't heard of these incidents.

齐秦 was injured when undergoing traditional Chinese therapy and suffered 60% burns on face.
Xinmsn reports:
A few days ago, veteran singer Chyi Chin was burnt on his back, face and arms, when a cupping therapy went awry.

Yesterday afternoon, Chyi Chin's management agency released a declaration, recounting the incident and thanking netizens for their care and concern for the singer.

According to the declaration, the cause of the accident is due to a cupping therapy (used in traditional Chinese medicine) gone wrong. The therapist was said to have brought along insufficient tools for the treatment and used Chyi Chin's physiotherapy equipment at home. He filled one of the ten cups with flammable alcohol used during the treatment.

The cupping therapy was done in an upward direction, starting from Chyi Chin's waist.

When the therapist was treating the singer's shoulders, he forgot that the tenth cup was used to hold the flammable liquid and proceeded to light the cup on fire and attempt to place it over the last acupuncture point. This caused the alcohol to pour all over Chyi Chin's shoulders and cheeks.

The declaration also mentioned the singer's current medical condition, stating that the swell on Chyi Chin's face has receded after 72 hours of burn treatment. He is now able to eat and move his arms and legs.

However, visitations are still not allowed, because Chyi Chin is highly prone to viral infection during this sensitive period.

Wedding bells again from showbiz. This time from local celebrity, Lynn Poh.

Last week, Lynn suddenly sent a text message via Monsoon Hair Group, to invite some media for a private gathering at St Regis Hotel.

xinmsn contacted Lynn after receiving the text message, to find out if the private gathering was to announce an endorsement launch or her wedding. However, the tight-lipped actress merely laughed and said that she would be announcing more than one piece of good news.

On Sep 1, the 'private gathering' turned out to be a press conference for Lynn's latest product endorsement. The actress also announced that she would be getting married and handed out the wedding invitations at the venue.

Lynn, who had previously invited her celebrity friends including Aileen Tan and her husband, Constance Song, and Cavin Soh, handed them her wedding invitation personally.

In addition to the announcement that she would be the new spokesperson for BIOAPEX, a skin center, Lynn also quipped excitedly, "That's right! I'm getting married on Sep 23 and the wedding is going to be held here [at St. Regis]!"

不当“木头人”　学生发言的5大情况！

本地学生羞涩于发言，不太爱发问或发表意见，常常令老师感到头痛。尤其，在老师提出问题后，现场出现一片寂静，气氛也会因此尴尬起来。

学生们都喜欢在课堂上做“木头人”？到底在他们在什么样的情况下，他们才会踊跃发言？omy访问了时下年轻人，整理了学生们会愿意发言的五大情况。

一、当老师是一位和蔼可亲的人
不少受访者表示，当授课老师是一位好好先生或女士时，他们会比较愿意分享自己的想法。

22岁的许诗慧（国大媒体系大四生）认为，亲切的老师会消除学生们上课时的焦虑感，也会鼓励学生多发言。

二、当班上有人率先打破沉默
只要有人率先打破沉默，其他学生就会陆续发言？国大中文系大四生陈美君（22岁）说，许多人其实不介意在班上分享意见，只不过他们会害羞，不想成为第一个发言的人。

22岁的陈振麟（国大中文系大四生）也表示赞同。他说：“在班上看见同学滔滔不绝时，会激发我想要发言的冲动。因为我不想让他一人独大，我会想要战胜他！”

三、当气氛十分尴尬时
如果同学们都不发言，全班会陷入僵局，怎么办？受访者吴慧如（24岁，待业）表示，这种情况常让她受不了，因而会试图打破沉默。“大家都不说话，我会有压迫感，有要说话的压力。”

23岁的陈佩琪也表示，学生不说话会使老师很尴尬，因此会主动回应问题，让老师“下台”。

四、当影响到学分时
许多学生坦言，一旦知道不发言会影响成绩时，他们就会设法开口说话。

国大中文系大四一名郑姓女生（22岁）说：“有些课会有class participation points，这个时候，即使我不知道要说什么，我也会硬硬说出些东西，（尤其是）当我发现其他人都已经说过话的时候。”

五、当班上人数不多的时候
班上的人数，也会影响到学生的发言？

新加坡国立教育学院院生胡玮珊（23岁）认为，如果班上的人数不多，学生们会觉得即使说错了，也不用在意太多人的眼光，因此比较不拘谨和害羞。

郑佩琪也认为，若是班小，而其中又有自己的朋友，这不仅会增添亲切感，也会减少发言时的压力。

How true are these pointers? Only students will know better.

1) Personally I think this point has the least effect among the 5. Even though the teacher may be friendly and approachable, the class can still be very quiet, due to many other more impactful factors. Many students might approach the teacher individually outside lesson hours, but during the lesson, students might still remain as quiet as always. Even if the teacher is really very enthusiastic at the start, facing a quiet class after some time can make the teacher lose motivation too.

2) Well this is often the case. When someone starts speaking up, the rest will follow, especially when what the first speaker said is very debatable. But if the speaker voices out a common view shared by all(most) the students, no one else might follow up. If the 'answer' by the speaker is very complete, and sounds 'very correct', this might also result in nobody else trying to oppose or add on to the discussion. As those who take the initiative to speak up first are only a handful, the teacher might end up hearing the same voice over and over again. This might also discourage the rest to speak up first, since they know someone is going to speak up anyway.

3) I agree that it's really awkward if the teacher asks a simple question and the class refuses to answer. I use the word 'refuse' because there are many cases where the answer is simple and straightforward, and the class (or at least majority) knows it but yet no one wants to answer. It gets more awkward if the teacher doesn't want to provide the answer, and expects someone to speak up eventually. This will result in a long long looooong silence, where students just look at each other in a 'Hey you answer leh!' face. This can be a waste of precious lesson time especially if time is running out, and the teacher still insists in asking questions when he/she knows that response will be poor. The 'hand-raising' poll is even worse - time-consuming and most of the time no conclusion can be made.

4) This can only be experienced in university. Who cares about participation points in primary/secondary school or JC? Haha. In such a competitive environment, it's normal for one to break his/her usual silence and garner all the courage to speak up in class. While some may argue that this scheme might encourage people to speak up just for the sake of speaking up (sometimes with meaningless views), more often than not it makes the class more vibrant, and makes the teacher's job of facilitating discussion easier. In some cases, several students might even compete to answer the question at the same time. But come on, do you think the teacher actually takes note of who speaks up and who gets more participation points? (particularly those who don't ask for your name)

5) This is the most important factor in my opinion. This is the reason why lessons are often split into big-group lectures and small-group tutorials. Most don't want to become the centre of attention among so many people. To lecturers who say 'Please feel free to stop me anytime to ask a question': wishful thinking.

On a side note, the responses given by the interviewees sound pretty competitive, don't you think? That's NUS for you.

Reports has it that recently 赵又廷 admitted that his relationship with 周渝民 had been on the rocks ever since the former won the 金钟奖 Best Actor Award.
Xinmsn reports:
During an interview, Vic's housemate Xiu Jie Kai revealed that Mark Chao and Vic Chou's relationship nosedived after Mark won the 2009 Best Actor award at the Golden Bell Awards for his role in Taiwanese drama series, Black & White. It is known that the both of them did not contact each other since then.

The duo's once-brotherly friendship is now a thing of the past as neither Mark nor Vic tried to resolve the unspoken happiness over the award.

Alongside with Jie Kai, Mark was also present at the Here Comes Kang Xi interview. Jie Kai revealed that ever since Mark was announced the winner, he "knew that something would happen" to Vic. He was told by Vic that amongst all the nominations he bagged after entering showbiz, this [Best Actor nomination at the Golden Bell Awards in 2009] was the only time that he thought he would win.

When Jie Kai returned home after the event, the atmosphere in the house was awkward, and Vic locked himself in the room.

"[Vic] felt sad as he was not awarded, and he was not sure how to face Mark in person anymore," said Jie Kai.
Mark then admitted that when he won the award, he had hesitations over expressing his happiness and even thought of going to Vic's house to look for him, but did not do so in the end.

Both of them have not been in contact since then, while Jie Kai is said to be trapped in between his buddies, he still tries to convey and update the estranged pair on each other's current situation.

In response to this revelation, Vic's manager said, "The situation is not as bad. Mark did text Vic, but Vic is the one who prefers to stay at home when he is not working, and would not reply to text messages from others. According to Taiwanese media reports, Calvin from Fahrenheit boyband is currently in a stable relationship with a Singaporean girl by the name of Jolene Tang.

When the media clarified the rumours with Jolene, the Singaporean girl readily admitted that she is Calvin's girlfriend and said that they were introduced to each other through a common friend during his promotional activities in Singapore.

So how did they maintain their long-distance relationship?

Jolene revealed that they "relied on sending text messages" because of the expensive charges on overseas phone calls.

She also added that it has been years since she last saw him and replied, "He's busy at work, I have to be understanding towards him," when reporters asked about their last meeting.

According to Jolene, Calvin proposed to her on Aug 28 via Facebook and she agreed to his proposal.

Taiwanese actor Lin Yo-Wei is getting married.

News broke two days ago on the actor impending marriage on September 10. Yo Wei confirmed the rumours when the pair posted their wedding photos online days ago, drawing envy from netizens who saw the lovely couple.

Yo-Wei's relationship with girlfriend Angie was exposed last year, when the pair was caught watching a soccer match together.

Yo-Wei had reportedly hinted that weddings bells were ringing, telling best friend, singer Wilber Pan that he "might become a groom very soon."

Yo-Wei has also denied reports that he will leaving showbiz, stressing that he loves his job and would be working even harder to provide for his family after his marriage.

Rumour has it that Taiwanese singer Jay Chou and model Hannah Quinlivan have been in a relationship for some time now.

Last week, the pair reportedly travelled to Europe together. Jay had denied the allegation but a Hong Kong tabloid magazine published a shot of the couple at Marseille Port a few days ago.

According to the report, Jay started his 13-day vacation on August 8, while Hannah's holiday began from her birthday on August 12. On August 14 at about 5pm, Jay who was wearing a black beanie, appeared at Marseille Port with 18-year-old Hannah.

According to an eyewitness, while the pair was about to disembark from the ferry, Jay suddenly held out his right hand, lightly hugging Hannah from the back. He was seen in this intimate pose for awhile and finally let go of his hand when they were approaching the exit. After disembarking from the ferry someone who recognised Jay went to up to speak to the superstar, giving him a shock.

In response to the exposé, Jay posted on his microblog, "Either you missed it, or you get the back. I'm sorry. Next time, I'll give you something with a front view. Haha... Or perhaps I'm a descendant from the God of Gambler that you could only photograph my back."

However, Hannah's manager emphasised that Jay and her are "just friends", and added that as this was a personal trip, the model did not have an assistant travelling with her.

I don't know if this is just a personal opinion from the journalist, or a genuine thought by most people present at the rally.

At least from what I've gathered online (we all know netizens are super critical and tend to bash things more easily than to praise), there seems to be lots of hate words towards Sharon Au, who recently returned to SG from her studies in Japan. And we know how her association with Lightning is going to pull her down even more among the more opposition-based netizens.

'Go back to Japan!'
'Go back to Paris with your French boyfriend!'
'I disrespect her now for using such tactic to boost her career'
were some of the comments I've seen.

Sigh, somehow I sympathize with her too. This cannot, that also cannot. Everything she does seems to attract negativity from the cynical Sgeans. Actually I still hope she can go back to hosting.

But back to the main point, giving a speech without reading off a script is indeed commendable. Those who have learnt about presentation techniques in university should understand this. Look at how many politicians still use a script while making a speech.

Selina is finally getting married!!!
Details of the wedding was gradually released to the press.
Xinmsn reports:
According to Richard's update on his microblog, the wedding would be held on Oct 31, with about 88 tables of guests. Another banquet would be held at Changhua city on Dec 16, and the date of their registration has yet to be decided.

Richard confirmed that the couple would wed on Selina's birthday (Oct 31), but the wedding would be kept simple -- instead of glamorous and luxurious -- in consideration of Selina's health condition.

Currently, their marriage registration date, the guest list, bridesmaids and best men, as well as wedding itinerary are still not finalised.

Richard also uploaded a two-minute voice clip -- recorded by Selina -- sharing her joy and happiness with her fans.

In the recording, Selina exclaimed, "I'm finally getting married!"

The starlet admitted that marriage is something she has been anticipating her entire life and let on that they had already booked a banquet at the Sheraton Hotel. Wedding invitations have also been printed, she revealed.

Selina said that she was excited but nervous, since her wedding is only two months away. She hoped that she would recover soon, although her scars are still itchy and she can't move about freely.

The singer also sobbed and sang to express her joy of becoming a bride.

It shocks everyone when 周渝民 revealed that he has suffered from depressions due to the pressures from the showbiz.

Taiwanese heartthrob Vic Chou shot to fame in 2001, after his role in drama Meteor Garden.

Sporting a moustache now, Vic said to the Chinese press, "But many people looked down on me, especially those in showbiz. Who is he? He's just a 'pretty vase'."

He added, "People might not believe me when I say this. When I first entered showbiz, all I wanted was to leave this industry. I kept thinking how I could get out of my contract and say goodbye to all these."

While drama offers came pouring in, Vic still hoped to keep a distance from showbiz because he had seen the things people do to reach the top. The actor was inevitably bullied because he is a person who "is unwilling to fight, and would rather do things quietly".

"I was struggling. With my kind of attitude, I would still be bullied, no matter where I worked; but not wanting to fight is my nature," Vic said.

Vic's emotional burden accumulated over the years, resulting in depression a few years ago.

"I was immune to pain and was unafraid of death, during the worst period when I had depression. Death became optional. In other words, I would die, if I wanted to die today," he let on.

The actor might have talked about his illness lightly now, but his condition was rather severe back then.

"Luckily, I have positive-thinking friends, who were willing to listen to me, towards the end of my therapy, and I would tell them about my condition. You're actually helping yourself, if you're willing to share. The negativity would decrease," Vic said.

If the twin sisters are really so magnanimous to share their husband, then I wish all the best to them. However if there are conflicts, I can't imagine how complicated it can become. Won't the sisters get jealous of each other? How about their children? There are so many potential problems that might arise.

I guess if they have managed to maintain their good relationships since childhood, there shouldn't be much of a problem in the future, I hope.

While she is not annoyed when probed about her private life, Kit Chan felt that everyone should be very clear on what they want and, at the same time, protect their personal space.

She also revealed that she did not use any social networking media, such as Facebook and Twitter. Kit added that she is fine with those who use them, but emphasised that she herself would not use it.

Kit shared that her friend, who thought that she had a Facebook account, chatted with her online, was furious when she discovered that it was not the singer in person.

On Oct 13 and 14, Kit would be the first mainstream performing artiste to sing at the Grand Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.

To that, the singer happily expressed that she liked the feeling of being the first in line for a challenge. She also revealed that the music director for her concert would be famous local musician Goh Kheng Long.

Kit also specially thanked Taiwanese singer Lee Hom, who voluntarily changed his concert date, after learning that their concert dates would clash.

A few days ago, Taiwanese singer A-Mei turned 39 years old.

A-Mei did not want to celebrate her birthday initially, but she was surprised with a secret birthday party at the end of the day.

Her staff had lured her out for a "small get-together" at a pub, where her aboriginal family and friends were waiting inside, to help her celebrate her big day.

The preparations for the surprise party started late afternoon and more than 20 family members and friends helped to decorate the place. There were also a group of dancers -- and muscular male dancers -- present, while waiting for the star to arrive.

A-Mei arrived at 8.30pm. Her rumoured bartender boyfriend Sam took out a cake, to which A-Mei responded by singing her trademark song 'Bad Boy'.

A "balloon-modelling expert" was also there to create balloons of various shapes and sizes because many children were present. Taiwanese host Blackie Chen and singer Christine Fan were also present at the celebration.

The birthday party carried on late into the night and ended after 2am. When Sam left, he was seen carrying his suit, looking tired and tipsy. The bartender also exchanged a few words with a staff member before leaving.

Not long later, A-Mei emerged from the back door, glassy-eyed and inebriated. Although the pop diva had to be escorted to her car with the help of two assistants, A-Mei's manager denied the singer was drunk.

"A-Mei did not drink a lot because her mother was present. Her assistants helped her out because it was too dark and they were worried that she might fall," he said.

Today i will be featuring MP 魔幻力量's second album. They previously call themselves Magic Power but now change to short form "MP".

First up is this really youthful and lively song called 不按牌理出牌.
This song also happens to be the theme song for 醉后决定爱上你.
I like this song a lot.
Makes u feel like getting up on your feet and dance. Haha.
And the chorus is quite addictive also.

Next song is totally different feel from the previous song.
Much more heavy and 感伤.
But nonetheless still very nice.

Well, in my opinion, this song isn't as strong as the previous two songs - a little bit monotone. Haha.

The new semester is starting and here are the modules that I will be doing.

BCP4002: Consulting Practicum
HY2229: Nation Building in Singapore
MNO4313B: Seminar in M&O: Culture and Management in Asia
PS2249: Government and Politics of Singapore
SC2210: Sociology of Popular Culture

As you can see, I will be mostly in Arts this semester.
Feeling quite apprehensive about the level 4 management module cos I only took one management module prior to this and it is a level 4 module also. Hope that i will be able learn great insights from this module and also pray that i will be able to cope with this module's content and workload. I think have to submit assignment every week, hope i can do well in them as well.

I foresee this semester will be a relatively busy one especially with Consulting Practicum.
Hopefully i will be able to manage my time well and do well for all the modules.

May the Lord guide me along and help me brave through all the challenges ahead.

Raising them again!

They are raising it again! The little buses and suffocating trains that we ride, we have to pay more for them in October, and the basis is on their vague promise of better transport system. Frankly speaking, I am sure previous promises was on better transport system as well. But I do not see any positive improvement. Everything is still as stuffy. We have been taught that good ideas come in budget. To resolve the issue of poor public transport, shouldn't they think of ways to improve, without throwing in loadsa of gold? If throwing in the money promises improvement, ANYONE can do it! Afterall, you just need to buy buy buy buy keep buying keep building, and poof we have a good system. Transport system planning becomes so simple. The costs of my everyday travelling has become overbearing. I mean 2 return trips can amount to 4bucks! This is too much. I am getting a bicycle, before they decide to raise the prices of the bike as well.

"Preparing for a wedding is like preparing for a show. While a wedding is not a show, the process is almost the same," Karen said.

The singer had been keeping mum regarding the details of the wedding, although it was known that she hoped to marry in Florence, Italy.

However, Karen let slipped yesterday that her "wedding will be in early October. It's actually very soon."

The singer added that a male fan commented on her microblog, saying he had bought tickets to her concert and will be proposing to his girlfriend then. The fan hopes his girlfriend would be touched by Karen's singing.

Karen sent her well wishes to the fan, and hopes that his proposal would be successful.

However, Selina's role will be replaced by a 18 year-old singer from China 陆翊. She is said to resemble Selina at certain angles. (Really? You see this actor acting as policeman/CID in countless dramas. How about seeing him 自弹自唱 on a guitar?

Yup he's Tay Ping Hui, and he will be performing in a musical 《记得说再见》 where he gets to display both his acting and musical skills. Musical skills?! You may ask. Actually it has been his childhood dream to become a rock star. He has been learning guitar since secondary school, enjoys rock music and has always been exposed to music all these while. He used to be a lead singer cum manager in his university hall band. However he mainly deals with English songs.

Tay Ping Hui's singing ability was recognised by the producer of 《记得说再见》 during the year-end countdown party, where he sang 彩虹 by 动力火车. This is not his first performance though. Unknown to most people, he had performed in a concert before, 自弹自唱 alongside other veteran singers like 庾澄庆 and 伍佰.

In the musical, Tay will be casted along with local artistes such as 姚懿珊、沈炜竣、潘嗣敬、黎沸辉 etc.

This week we will introduce another debut album from an upcoming young singer. This time it's local. Do you still remember him?

Shawn Tok 卓轩正 was still pretty kiddy then, but he sang well. Some years later his voice broke. Now, 5 years after the competition, at 18 years-old, he could finally release his very first album. When I first heard this song over the radio, I couldn't tell it was him.
This is is album 主打 - 和时间一起旅行.

The songs in the album are mainly produced by 迷路兵. As you can listen, he longer has the high-pitched little-boy voice that he once wow-ed the audience with.
This is the second hit, 相思病. Got a news report in the middle of the song haha.

This song has stirred quite a bit of commotion recently among the music entertainment scene. It has been blasted and criticised by many, who couldn't stand the style of this song, especially the sharp, nasal, in-your-face, ear-piercing voice, right from the very start.

Though this song may be annoying, it gets stuck in your head quickly and easily. A few more listens and I doubt you can erase the melody off your mind.

Not only the voice, melody and lyrics, even the MV itself looks kind of silly. What is 刘子千 trying to achieve here? Let's 'enjoy' this controversial song 念你 by 刘子千. (So many dislikes lol)

自制短片辱骂新加坡人　中国男学生遭校方开除

中国学生自制短片辱骂新加坡人代价大，不仅被校方开除，还无法取回一年近1万元的学费，就连在自己的博客上道歉也救不了他，或得“收拾包袱”回国。

这名24岁的学生王鹏飞（译音）原是东亚管理学院（EASB)酒店管理(hospitality）最后一年的学生。

他星期六在网上上载一段4分多钟名为“新加坡姚娆哥辱骂新加坡人”的录像，戴着黑框大眼镜，并用深色口红涂上夸张的大嘴唇，说话调高声调，还高举兰花指，做出一些女性化的动作，多方辱骂新加坡人，还抨击本地少数族群，引起轩然大波。

其中一些批评就包括：外国人来新求学，好比来新签卖身契；新加坡人懂很多语言却没有用处，只知道新加坡式英语；新加坡人把“three”（3）念成“tree”（树），等等。

东亚管理学院执行董事余光华向《新报》证实，王鹏飞即日起被学校开除，因为他自制上述短片是严重的行为失检。

“他被学校开除后，学生证也会被取消。我们也会提醒他要有合格的准证才能留在新加坡，逾期逗留是犯法的。”

此外，王鹏飞缴付的1万多元学费也会泡汤。余光华说，只要无损学校声誉，校方不会干涉学生发表个人意见，王鹏飞已经接受学校的决定。据了解，王鹏飞08年来新，在新求学至少3年。

This is the NDP 2011 theme song, In a Heartbeat by Sylvia Ratonel, the runner up for the third season of Singapore Idol.
The theme song is not the fun pack song hor. Haha. Although i must admit the fun pack song is now more popular that this theme song.
The reason on why i feature the theme song so late is that i find this song quite weak. Yup, it is nice but i find it missing on something.
In my opinion, the quality of NDP theme song is like dropping over the years. The last decent one was 晴空万里 by 蔡淳佳. And mind you only the Chinese version is nice. English version so so only.
We really need to boost the quality of the theme song as its really an important aspect of the celebration. Makes people look forward to the actual parade. An essential marketing tool if you ask me.
We need better songs and more iconic Singaporean superstar to sing the theme song next year!!!
In the meanwhile, let's just try to enjoy this song ba.
And yes that familiar face you see in that MV is 欧菁仙.

Servbot's Chemical Engineering course at NUS: 10th
Reiko's Chinese Studies at NUS (i assumed its ranked under Modern Languages): 18th
Mango's Chinese Studies at NTU (i assumed its ranked under Modern Languages): 51st to 100th Region
Not sure Chinese Studies should be ranked under modern languages or linguistics though. If it's under linguistics, Reiko's would be 15th while Mango's would be still be in the 51st to 100th region.

与芒果的幸福星期天

最快乐的事，其实很单纯。

一波又一波的复杂和紧张让人迷失了方向。

怎么从前都没那么提心吊胆地过日子？

曾几何时，日子变成一场又一场的战斗？

难怪会觉得自己像是笼中鸟。

但今天却感到无比无比的开心。

因为和芒果去看了一场非常浪漫的芭蕾舞表演。

我们坐在星空下，望着舞台上的芭蕾舞者轻盈地跳跃、降落，就像是人形的音符，伴着交响乐飞舞着。

我最喜欢的是第二和三的表演。

第二个表演具有亚洲的风格又结合了芭蕾。男舞者挥舞、旋转着手中的棍子，然后跳跃、翻滚。一步步都恰到好处。力化成了柔，然后再重复，让人感觉到一种和伴舞的音乐一样的节奏，使人目不转睛！

第三个表演的女舞者穿着薄薄的浅紫色长裙，每次将脚踢倒空中再放下时，裙子都会轻柔地飘起，再落下，宛若花瓣向外张开。

最好玩的是我和芒果在20分钟的休息时间，躺在席子上，轻松地聊着。这样的悠闲让我真的很开心！一种暖暖的，愉快的感觉保护着我的心，为它带来平日极度缺乏的温暖。真的很开心 :)

吃着美味但简单的食物，看着优雅的舞姿，听着古典的旋律，聊着乱七八糟的话，

对我来说，那也是一种幸福。

今天我很幸福。:)

除了这个之外，我还为自己买了四本书当作生日礼物。超开心的~

而且回家的时候突然发现其实过程比结果重要。如果不想再感觉乏味，那么就应该注重过程，否则只是没头没脑的重复。

孙燕姿 recently visited Taiwan with her husband on a short honeymoon trip.
Xinmsn reports:
Local singer Stefanie Sun and her newly-wed husband Nadim van der Ros visited Taiwan over the weekend for a short honeymoon trip.

According to the Taiwan media, upon arriving in Taiwan on Saturday evening, the couple headed for dinner with Stefanie's friends before attending a star-studded party at Saya Chang's A★Bar.

After a good night's sleep, on Sunday, staff and friends from Stefanie's recording company took the couple to Jiufen, a renowned tourist destination in Taiwan, before proceeding to a shop famous for their spicy hotpot.

However, the group had to settle for a steamboat dinner instead as the shop was packed with customers.

After dinner, the group headed to a night market, where Stefanie readily greeted fans whenever she was approached.

The singer then took her husband for a foot massage session after their night market trip.

The next morning, Stefanie took Nadim to try the famous braised pork at Ximending, before heading to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

During a dinner gathering with Stefanie's recording company, when Nadim proudly showed the pictures they took during their tour, the singer's colleagues teased her for acting like a tourist despite having been in Taiwan for so long.

The singer sighed, saying, "That's because I have never really toured Taiwan!"

Just before the couple left the hotel at 4pm to catch their 6pm flight back to Singapore, they managed to check out the fantastic view at the famous Taipei101.

Over the weekend, at the 16th Annual COMPASS Awards, local singer JJ Lin beat Stefanie Sun and Tanya Chua to win the "Best Local Singer" title for the fourth consecutive year.

However, due to his brother's wedding, for the first time, the singer was unable to attend the awards ceremony.

The annual COMPASS Awards is an event to recognize the hard work local musicians had put in over the past year, and a total of 16 awards were presented this year.

The "Best Local Singer" award, which was based on the total royalty fees earned by the nominated singers for the songs they sing, saw JJ coming in first.

JJ also bagged the "Best Local Lyricist" award that night, an award based on the most royalty earnings the nominated lyricists had earned in the past year.

Despite his absence, in a video that JJ had prepared beforehand, the singer apologized to the audience saying, "This is the first time I am unable to attend the awards ceremony, as I have an important wedding to attend. It is my brother's wedding, which is more than just a friend's wedding. It is also my first time being the best man."

In the video, JJ also thanked COMPASS for the award, and mentioned that this will serve as a constant reminder for him to continue working hard, creating breakthroughs and producing even more great music, as this is his calling.

According to the Taiwanese media, the total income for JJ last year was a whopping NT$200 million (about S$8.7 million).

The all-rounder has a total of three houses and two sports cars under his name, in both Taiwan and Singapore. The singer's fashion label has also taken flight, and he is planning to expand his business to Taipei, following the branches in Singapore and Shanghai.

Today we are going to feature 王心凌's latest album 《黏黏黏黏》.
It has been a really long time since she stepped foot into Singapore.
Not sure if it is due to the really bad impression she gave the press here years ago when she was here.
But strangely her drama series is always aired here on Channel U and always 同步首播 with Taiwan. First is 《桃花小妹》 then comes 《美乐加油》.
My question is can she still sustain using this cutesy cutesy image even as she approaches 30 years of age?

First up is 黏黏黏黏.
The lyrics and the melody to this song is penned by 王心凌 herself.
I personally think this song is not bad. Quite nice to listen to.
But i think it is quite a wrong strategy to use this as the first 主打.
It sort of limit herself back to this cutesy genre.
And this song is very dangerous in a sense that a lot of people will be quite 反感 with it cos they will think that she is acting cute.
Well, you listen to this song and judge for yourself ba.
Lollipop F's 敖犬 appeared in this MV too.

I like this second song.
In fact, this should be the route and genre that she should be going.

Cherishing the last year of varsity life
The freedom an undergrad enjoys will be a sweet memory in working life

THEY say one does not know what one has until it is almost gone.

I am talking about undergraduate life - usually signed off each July with happy scenes that involve the tossing of funny-shaped hats.

The working life that follows is something to be looked forward to, but now being just a year away from that new phase of life is making me appreciate college life a lot more than I ever did.

For starters, there is the weight of expectations - and the consequences of falling short of them.

At work, I would expect to be entrusted with enduring responsibilities that only increase were I to start scaling the corporate ladder.

And if I fluff my lines badly, I expect someone to notice, the mistake to go on my record, and my hopes of quick promotion and end-of-year bonus utterly dashed. My boss would lose faith in me.

Just this past semester I submitted a term paper I had a very bad feeling about.

It came back with an A+, but would have made little difference coming back with a C- as far as others were concerned. I was accountable only to myself. Any disappointment would have been my own to bear.

Second, as a student I can lead a lazy lifestyle that could never happen in most respectable jobs.

Working life imposes an inescapable structure on your life - you are meant to be on the job between a certain start and end time each day, and any periods of absence need to be justified.

Similar rules are in place in the form of class timetables to regulate an undergraduate's comings and goings, but at the end of the day, he can decide on a whim whether or not to keep to them.

The consequence of skipping school? Perhaps the need for more intense mugging, to make up for lost time. Also possibly a headache from falling asleep in a bad posture. Best of all, the grades do not necessarily have to suffer. Most of us, myself included, know this from experience.

But the consequence of skipping work without first declaring it on a leave schedule - it's a short walk to not being wanted back. Not to mention a sure way to make yourself unpopular with your colleagues.

The reason for this difference?

The gap in responsibility between being a student and a worker.

As most Singaporean males would have experienced first-hand at some point during national service, mistakes bring suffering upon colleagues. The consequences are felt almost immediately, because sheaves of paper with your name on it end up in the in-trays of colleagues.

The bottom line is simply that if I skipped as many work days on a whim as I have lectures, I would be out of a job long before the end of the third year - a milestone I have already passed in college.

With colleagues counting on me to do my work well and on time, I dare not let them down. It is one thing to hurt oneself, but a far worse thing to hurt others when they do not deserve it.

It is undeniable that responsibility is more than just a virtuous way to behave. Responsible behaviour is not easy to display consistently, but it is a requirement for survival in adult life. Unfortunately.

For now, though, I shall enjoy having nothing to do with it for the final year of undergraduate life that remains.

And some years down the road, I intend to further my studies.

Not simply for the sake of improving my qualifications, but also to relive what I am about to leave behind.

Early this year I featured a similar article. This time I decided to do the same, in order to constantly remind myself that I should cherish my days in University.

It can be pretty scary how fast time flies. I was introducing myself to other university students when I said 'Year 3...going to Year 4 soon'. Hey wait, year 4? Final year? Gosh! I'm Year 4 already! I feel so old compared to those who are waiting to enter uni.

In education the levels are clearly identified by numbers (eg primary 3, secondary 2, etc) so you can keep track how fast time flies (and how old you're getting). But in work there is no such distinction, so 5 or 10 years can pass without you feeling much.

Although this phrase 'cherish your university years' has been said to death, I still have no idea in how to do it. I still mug a lot during school term, putting my focus in academics rather than school-related activities. While friends are participating in camps, getting involved in volunteer work, contributing to CCA organizations etc, I'm still standing my ground in prioritizing my studies. At least in JC, though short, I had fond memories in my CCA activities. But in uni, there is nothing much to reminisce, other than academic matters.

If someone were to ask me, 'What is your best memory in university life', I wouldn't know how to answer it...

The only thing I know is, I'm trying to make full use of university holidays to travel overseas. This is what made me decide to go Europe. 'If I don't go now, I probably won't have the chance to go later, and enjoy myself as much.' I'm actually hoping to go for a summer exchange someday, but I guess I won't have much of a chance anymore. The final summer is already gone.

苏打绿's 青峰 is recently involved in a text message scandal.
Xinmsn reports:
Steamy text messages between an unknown man and Wu Tsing-Fung, lead singer of Taiwanese pop group Sodagreen, were circulated on the Internet, but the singer's manager expressed that it could be a prank.

According to a Hong Kong magazine, a lost phone containing more than 30 steamy text messages between Tsing-Fung and the phone's owner was found at a night club on June 29.

The messages contain sexually explicit content such as, "Haven't you thought it through before wanting to come by? Why don't we just go all the way?"

It was believed that the phone's owner had sent even more explicit messages to Tsing-Fung, with the singer finally replying with, "Let's play by ear. We should start with hugging and kissing, since it would be too awkward to just head for the showers directly."

When contacted, the owner of the phone was shocked but admitted that the person in the text messages was Tsing-Fung.

The man added saying that they have never met, but have exchanged text messages and shared video calls with the singer.

In response to the news, the singer's manager confirmed that the number belongs to the singer, but mentioned that it was only for Tsing-Fung's personal use.

The manager too said that it could be a prank, as Tsing-Fung had left his phone with a friend since his father passed away in June.

After his break up with model girlfriend Lillian Chen in March, JJ Lin, 30, has reportedly taken a liking to one of Taiwan's most beautiful host Weng Tzymann, and they have been seeing each another secretly for the past three months.

On July 3, the pair was photographed leaving a KTV together, but in response to this, both emphasised that they are just friends and that they were not alone that evening.

JJ and Tzymann were believed to have met at the 2010 Most Searched Award when they were invited to be the presenters for the ceremony.

The pair reportedly hit off and had exchanged contact numbers then.

Ever since JJ broke up with Lilian in March, the two began hanging out more often, and in April, they were seen going to the movies together in Taipei.

However, both denied the allegations and emphasised that they are just friends.
